This is the place to get big hair and see big names. Neville Hair and Beauty is the original pearl set amongst the glitz and glamour of Knightsbridge and Belgravia.

The salon has tended to the sleekest of celebrities to the original die hard clients who refuse to get their hair done anywhere else, who can’t change a hair habit of a lifetime.

Surrounded by so much prestige Neville’s is a refreshingly down to earth salon where it prides itself on its’ incredibly friendly and welcoming atmosphere, making it more a home from home for its regulars. A trip to Neville’s will make you look an feel good with the indulgent combination of superlative creative hair styling and the very best wellbeing treatments.

Neville Tucker is recognised by many in the industry as the ‘godfather’ of celebrity hairdressers… Ever conscious of the importance of in-depth training, he nurtured the early talents of Lee Stafford, Errol Douglas, Richard Ward and Paul Edmond to name but a few! Neville himself trained at Alexandra Paris and at the Ginger Group.

Whilst evidently at the hub of the hairdressing world for many years, owing to his laid back persona, by his own volition Neville has rarely pushed himself into the spotlight, preferring the talent of his hairdressing skills to do the talking for him. Neville now runs Neville Hair & Beauty with Elena Lavagni, leaving him free to focus on what he loves – creating fabulous hairstyles!

Showing how the salon is refusing to diminish and fade away due to other new salon kids on the block, Neville Hair and Beauty has recently undergone a face lift. On entering you are greeted by a fabulous retro orange reception desk which sets the scene for what’s to follow. Urban raw brick walls run along the side of both walls creating a modern, airy feel. The salon is uncluttered and spacious with no frills and spills; after all they leave their haircuts to do the talking.

The recent addition to the salon is the revamped colouring bar on the ground floor. Neville’s have gone to extreme lengths to make sure natural light falls into this room by extending the top floor window all the way down to the colouring bar so colouring stylists and customers see their new hair colour in a natural light. The Ultimate Kerastase Back Spa Beds allow you to kick your feet up and relax whilst apprentices lather your hair. So no aching neck or dead feet! Neville’s have incorporated these stunning and thoroughly individual design elements that typify the salons approach to making sure their client is happy every step of the way.

The beauty room is run by Fere Parangi, who is more than your average beautician, unbeknown to Fere, she has the tremendous title of being the best hot waxer in London. With seventeen years of beauty experience in Harvey Nichols under her white pinafore she waves her magic hands creating the most luxurious facial and even enjoyable leg wax due to her own soft, painless approach. Fere continues to pamper the Royalty and pop stars alike in their endless pursuit for the body beautiful. Her top treatments are Caviar treatment, Oxygen Facial, Honey Bee’s Wax and Caci.

Neville’s reputation for excellence appeals to a genuine cross section of clientele; their clients range from business women to socialites, models, royalty, celebrities and people living locally, who all return time after time for their signature style of contemporary sophistication. The salon is also a firm favourite with the press and Neville, Elena and the team are always keen to see journalists indulging themselves in the salon.

The Staff Neville’s guarantees excellence from cut and styling to colour and conditioning. All stylists have their own unique area of expertise and have built up their own clients who adore their style of cutting. /more

Neville Hair & Beauty employs a staff of 40, including a creative team of senior stylists, colourists, manicurists, Fere, their renowned beautician and of course the junior hairdressers, who in time-honoured tradition, will inevitably join the ranks of Neville’s previous graduates and become leading hairdressers of the future…

Up and coming stylists include James Rowe and Stephen Lowe, who joined the salon in Summer 2004, who are renowned not only for their work on leading magazines such as Russian and Italian Vogue, Harpers & Queen, Dazed and Confused and covers for ID and Tank, but also headed and predicted the innovative styles for London Fashion Week with quaint hair bows for designer Ashis and cool pony’s for designer Richard Nicholls for Autumn/Winter 05.

Website: www.ba-institute.com

A luxury clinic near Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge offering the latest in beauty aesthetics from France with treatments by French dermatologists. This clinic is run by Parisian Clarissa Nadle who has chosen French products for their excellent safety record and aesetheic results for most of the treatments – they also last longer than most other products on the market.

Women on the go need every scheduled second to count – not just those following the progress of business via Blackberry or meetings with children’s schools. Beauty and well-being go hand in hand with productive non-stop activity. The BA Institute in Knightsbridge offers instant, effective and long lasting anti-aging treatments applied by the experienced and sensitive hands of French doctors and practitioners. No need to go underground for a week or look for the darkest table in the restaurant. Five minutes with a soothing cream and a cup of tea and you will be back on the run, looking better than ever without any incriminating blemishes.

The BA Institute sources the newest and best French anti-aging treatments where the science has been treated seriously for years. The demanding French client looks for a more natural 3D appearance with flexibility. Imagine a Parisian trying to speak without pouting and raising eyebrows to the heavens – you might as well tie their hands behind their backs.

After years of research, Corneal, the French Pharmaceutical Laboratory, has developed a new line of fillers that for the first time give a natural 3-D result. The Parisians call it “a facelift in a syringe.” They are made of hyaluronic acid which is a fully absorbable filler and lasts 14-18 months which is longer than any other filler.

The range of products comes in different densities according to the areas that require treatment.

Voluma fills wrinkles with a tissue – friendly substance that fills out the epidermis with a 3D effect to create a naturally smooth and round look. It can add volume to the cheeks, cheekbones, temples and chin. Costs £900 per syringe

Surgilift Plus (Mesolgow) is a hyaluronic acid-based solution for mesolift techniques applied to the face, neck, décolleté and back of the hands.Costs £250 per syringe. The range also includes Surgilips which costs £400 per syringe.

Filorga is a French laboratory that has an excellent formula that blends minerals, fat dissolver and amino acids to break down fatty cells and control water retention – all causes of cellulite. The treatment is administered by a French doctor with a series of micro-injections. Results will begin to show immediately and the effects should be complete after five treatments.

Percutafeine is applied straight after each Filorga treatment to help maintain the effects. It is a body sculpting gel that dislodges and reduces the appearance of orange peel skin by activating blood circulation that prevents water retention and formation of fatty acids. Its instant results have made it one of the best selling anti-cellulite creams in France for more than 15 years. No need to stop after the last treatment – it will carry on maintaining your peachy skin for a long time.

About female incontinence:

Between 1 in five and 1 in seven women are suffering the embarrassment and social stigma of uncontrolled leaks as you read this. That is around 3,000,000 women. And it is not a disease of the elderly – it affects a third of new mums and women of any age. Half of all women WILL suffer SUI.

The sad thing is that 80% of cases could be quickly and easily cured with a simple exercise programme.

The criminal fact is that women are not told how to exercise effectively and that it is ESSENTIAL to exercise by squeezing against a resistance as recommended by Arnold Kegel, the ‘founder’ of pelvic floor exercises over 50 years ago.

This informative new website designed to emphasise the importance of pelvic floor health and to recommend simple methods to help overcome the distressing and socially isolating problems of stress incontinence.

Britain hangs out its dirty washing and more

image

London: A new survey has revealed that 6.6 million people in Britain do not wash their hands after going to the toilet. The survey of 3,000 people conducted by hygiene and sterilising experts Milton, has uncovered the grimy truth about Britain’s attitudes to hygiene and cleanliness.

Britons may be renowned for their demure appearance but the results of the Milton survey reveal a very different story in our attitudes to personal hygiene. 36% – that’s 21 million people – said they don’t take a bath or shower every day, but that’s nothing compared with the 6% – 3.6 million people – who bathe weekly and the shocking 1% – around 600,000 Britons – who are taking a bath or shower just once a month.

82% of people change their socks and underwear on a daily basis, however there are still a significant number – working out to be around 600,000 people in the country – who claimed they only changed their underwear on a monthly basis!

The grubby tale continues when it comes to the topic of Brits and their food with a massive 69% not washing hands before eating, 27% of people claiming they pick up and eat food from the floor.

Regionally, people in London and Scotland are the cleanest with 68% bathing
daily, compared to just 23% of Irish and 58% of Welsh. However, while the
majority of Londoners are keeping clean, the capital also had the highest percentage of people only bathing once a month. In the UK, people in the South West of England have the best hand hygiene with 95% washing hands after going to the toilet, closely followed by the North West 93% and Wales 91%. Worst for hand washing were the Northern Irish with over a third not washing hands after going to the toilet, followed by Scotland 15% and the Midlands 13%.

Steve Riley from Milton Pharmaceutical commented: “Britain’s are often accused of being over the top in our attitudes to cleanliness but as these results show, for some people the opposite is true. While not washing daily may not pose any major health threats, the lack of hand hygiene, particularly after going to the toilet and before eating could be putting people at risk of serious infections. Hands are the biggest carriers of germs and viruses including Influenza, E-coli, Rotavirus and MRSA”

Milton’s Top Tips for cleanliness

• While you might maintain excellent standards of personal hygiene,
can the same be said for the person sitting next to you on the bus? It’s very easy to pick up germs and viruses from public surfaces left there by dirty hands. Keep Milton Antibacterial Hand Gel in your bag to keep hands clean while on the go and kill any germs you might pick up

• Wash towels, clothes and linen weekly as germs can quickly build up

• Don’t be tempted to pick up food dropped on the floor, even if you
keep floors really clean, the food could still be coated in millions of bacteria in a matter of seconds

• After you have prepared raw meat, germs may be left behind on the
chopping board or work surface, which will then be transferred to other foods prepared on the same board or surface. Wash chopping boards in warm soapy water, rinse and wipe over with Milton to destroy strong smells and to disinfect the surface to avoid cross contamination of foods

• When you, or others around you, have a cold use Milton
Antibacterial Hand Gel to sanitise hands and prevent the spread of the virus. Keep areas, such as your desk, free from cold germs by cleaning regularly with the Antibacterial Wipes.

Milton Pharmaceutical has over 60 years of experience in creating hygiene and sterilising products which are clinically proven to kill harmful bacteria, fungi and viruses. The range includes Antibacterial Hand Gel, Antibacterial Surface Wipes and Spray and Sterilising Fluid and Tablets.

Consumers confused by diet health, says new research

image

London: Research out today shows that the current barrage of health and food information has confused people to the extent that one in four (26%) now choose to ignore government diet and nutrition advice. Instead, millions of Brits now rely on ‘pop-science’ advice from family and friends.

The research from juice and juice drink brand ‘Minute Maid’1 reveals that amid claim and counter claim, a worrying number of Brits are rejecting basic healthy eating maxims:
• One in six (17%) don’t believe that being overweight can lead to a heart attack or stroke
• A fifth (21%) don’t believe the basic ‘five-a-day’ guide on fruit and veg2
• Less than half (43%) believe they need vitamins to keep the body functioning
• Conversely, a fifth DO believe that eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away

Moreover, instead of getting information about healthy eating from a GP or nutritionist, most Brits rely on their family and friends (31%) as well as other media sources such as TV programmes (25%) and the internet (47%). Leading expert nutritionist, Nigel Denby says “It’s perhaps not surprising that there’s often confusion around some of these issues, particularly when people rely on hearsay and information from family and friends rather than heeding expert advice – often it simply boils down to the fact that health messages can be complicated, confusing and often conflicting”.

Such is the level of confusion about what’s healthy and what’s not, two thirds (60%) of shoppers admit they struggle to make the right choice in the supermarket.

Health alone isn’t a good enough reason for many people to take notice of advice on healthy eating – more than half (57%) say they would take notice if it was easier and one in eight (12%) would only be interested if it made them more attractive.

Some nutritionists are concerned that important messages on healthy eating aren’t getting though because they’re too complicated. Expert Nigel Denby said:

“It’s understandable that some people are confused about how to eat a healthy diet because there’s so much information out there, but if people ignore the basics of healthy eating then the UK could face long term health consequences, such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes.”

Commenting on the research, Robert Spencer, Brand Director from ‘Minute Maid’ said: “The research is concerning because in spite of good intentions it looks like people don’t know which way to turn when it comes to good food. Even those who do buy fresh fruit and veg don’t always get the benefits as a third us don’t get round to eating it and end up throwing it out.”

The ‘Minute Maid’ ‘Keeping Healthy Simple’ campaign aims to provide clear advice in relation to benefits and a range of easy to understand, great tasting juice and juice drinks – a 250ml serving also provides one of those all important ‘five a day’.

Longevity pill nearer, say scientists

image

New York: Scientists are a step closer to producing a superdrug to extend lifespan, according to a report in the journal Nature.

In the journal, the researchers from Harvard report that three compounds invented by Sirtris, a pharmaceutical company, have succeeded in activating cellular defenses that slow diseases of ageing in the same way associated with resveratrol, a naturally occurring chemical found in red wine.

The difference is that Sirtris’s synthetic compounds are 1,000 times as potent as the resveratrol in wine. This solves a big drawback with the naturally occurring chemical—wine contains such minute quantities that a person would have to drink hundreds of bottles a day to see any significant benefit.

The potent new pills mimic resveratrol in mice by activating the SIRT-1 gene, which appears to trigger a process called caloric restriction. In many organisms, that process acts to slow down aging and ramp up cellular defenses in the face of a reduced diet during times of scarce food supplies. Sirtris’s new compounds, however, act without the little critters having to reduce their diet.

In past experiments, many of them conducted by Harvard pathologist and Sirtris cofounder David Sinclair, resveratrol has increased the lifespan of mice up to 24 percent, and other simpler organisms such as yeast up to 59 percent. In November 2006, Sinclair and Sirtris scientists that resveratrol could reduce the impact of a high fat diet, increase stamina two fold and significantly extend lifespan of mice.

Skeptics have long claimed that aging is too complex to be regulated by a small number of genes, though Sinclair and other leading longevity scientists such as Leonard Guarente of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cynthia Kenyon of the University of California at San Francisco keep refining and supporting their argument that it is.

Investors have believed the Sirtris story enough to pony up $103 million in private rounds and $63 million in an IPO last May. Sirtris’ stock today has risen as much as 6 percent—roughly twice the rise in the S&P 500 index.

The current paper does not target longevity specifically, but demonstrates that Sirtris’s pills may slow a major disease of aging, diabetes type II, which afflicts 18 million Americans.

The pills improved insulin sensitivity, lowered plasma glucose levels, and increased the function of mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell that is associated with healthy and long-living cells.

Sirtris recently started human trials using a super-potent version of resveratrol, and so far the drug is reported to be producing positive results. The synthetic compounds are both more potent and more stable chemically.

They also are better candidates for Food and Drug Administration approval since in many cases a synthetic compound concocted in a lab can be more consistently manufactured and standardized for doses than products based on a natural compound.

The three “New Drug Entities” described in today’s paper will begin human trials in the first half of 2008.

Arthritis and rheumatism – a top consultant answers your questions

image

London: Is it arthritis? Is it rheumatism? What can I do to help it, or stop it getting worse? These are common questions – and not just for the elderly.
by Dr Charles Mackworth-Young, Consultant Rheumatologist, King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes London.

There are many kinds of arthritis. While osteoarthritis – which involves loss of cartilage within joints – tends to occur in older individuals, active inflammation of joints, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can strike people of any age. All forms of arthritis can eventually lead to joint damage. Most are partly genetic in origin: the majority of individuals with arthritis have probably inherited genes that have made them more susceptible to the condition. Other factors may contribute to arthritis – for instance certain infections, or even direct damage to joints, such as fractures.

“Rheumatism” is a rather vague term, but is generally used to mean pain in “soft” tissues in the back or limbs, such as muscles, tendons or ligament. This can be due to a number of causes, including strain and overuse. Examples include tendonitis at the wrist, tennis elbow, and heel pain due to “plantar fasciitis”. While many of these conditions are localised and may ultimately get better, they can be painful and debilitating while they last.

Most forms of arthritis cannot be cured by medical therapy. However the good news is that the majority can be improved considerably by treatment which reduces symptoms and may help prevent progression or damage. Therefore for symptoms that persist it is important to have an accurate diagnosis of what the problem is. This can be provided by a general practitioner or, if necessary, a specialist such as a rheumatologist.

There are a number of things that an individual with arthritis can do for him or herself. A lot is written about diet, much of it poorly supported by good evidence. However, for most people simple weight reduction is valuable, since it can result in less physical strain on joints in the back and legs. A diet low in animal fat – e.g. a “Mediterranean” diet – may help reduce joint inflammation, as may the addition of fish oil. Supplements, such as glucosamine, chondroitin and “MSM”, are available without prescription. They are widely used for osteoarthritis, and appear to be harmless: whether they genuinely help remains controversial. Various complementary therapies can be tried, including
chiropracticand acupuncture.

For most people with arthritis or rheumatism, orthodox professional help is needed. This is best given in a clinic or hospital where many different specialities and treatments are available. There are many good NHS hospitals that offer this. An outstanding unit in the private sector is King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes in Beaumont Street, London. Located in the Harley Street area of London, this remarkable hospital offers a wide range of services covering most disciplines. A unique feature is that each member of its consultant staff is hand-picked after a rigorous selection process, thus ensuring the highest standards of care. There is notable expertise in the area of arthritis and rheumatism, with an extensive range of medical, surgical and other specialities.

Many people with arthritis or rheumatism will need the advice of a rheumatologist. He or she may arrange tests at the hospital, including X-rays and scans; give advice about lifestyle and exercise; and prescribe drugs to help pain and tackle the disease. The rheumatologist may also recommend the opinion of other specialists. For instance there are orthopaedic surgeons who specialise in different areas, and carry out procedures ranging from keyhole surgery to joint replacement. Hand surgeons perform delicate work on tendons and joints. And spinal surgeons operate on the neck and back to release trapped nerves.

Supporting all of these activities are physiotherapists and occupational therapists who have particular expertise in arthritis and rheumatism. The physiotherapy department at King Edward VII’s Hospital is also lucky to have one of the few hydrotherapy pools in London: treatment in the water can be especially valuable for joint and muscle conditions, and in speeding up recovery after surgery.

Besides medical, surgical and physiotherapy approaches, direct control of discomfort can be important. At King Edward VII’s Hospital there is a specialised pain control team, who use a variety of injection and other techniques. They are supported by psychologists, who have particular experience in treating painful disorders.

This is an exciting time for the management of arthritic and rheumatic conditions. Many new and effective treatments are emerging, including “biological” therapies. Gene therapy may be the next great step.

Longevity accelerating, says new research

image

London: Longevity is accelerating and there are more 100 year olds than ever before, according to a new report by the Cass Business School.

They say that men born in 1985 can expect to live to an average age of 91, according to a new forecast of life expectancy which concludes that all existing projections are too low.

The Government’s key forecast for longevity, which is also used in the pensions and life insurance industry, has seriously miscalculated how long men will live in the future, they also say.

Life expectancy is currently 76.6 years for men and 81 for women. The new research suggests that life expectancy for men born in 1985, who turn 65 in 2050, could be as high as 97 under the most optimistic scenario, although 91 is its central forecast. That is six years higher than the Office for National Statistics’ projection. The new Cass model has been applied only to men so far, but the next phase of the research will cover women.

The new calculation has serious implications for the Government and the pensions industry, who face having to pay an extra £160,368 per person in state benefits and occupational pensions, Cass calculates.

David Blake, director of the Pensions Institute at Cass Business School, said: “Our calculations demonstrate that longevity is accelerating far beyond what is currently predicted, and there is considerable uncertainty surrounding future life expectancy. This will present a huge challenge for long-term healthcare providers and intensifies the problems faced by both government and the pensions industry. They need to update the projections they use before the pensions deficits reach catastrophic proportions.”

Professor Blake said that the Office for National Statistics had a history of underestimating new trends: “It completely underestimated the scale of the postwar baby boom, which had serious implications for the provision of schools and hospitals, and it has continually underestimated longevity of elderly people.”

The Government has voiced concerns about the ageing population and has taken some steps to make provision for more older people. The retirement age is rising from 65 to 68 by 2044. Those actions were promoted by the ONS forecast that the proportion of over65s will go from 15 per cent now to 25 per cent by 2050. However, less provision for the older population has been made in healthcare.

The new centurions

– There are about 9,000 men and women over the age of 100, but the numbers are rising by 7 per cent a year

– By 2050, more than 150,000 people will be centenarians

– The costs of treating dementia and caring for sufferers have been calculated at £17 billion (and rising) per year

Smokers most at risk of eyesight loss from ageing

image

New York: Smoking is one of the strongest risk factors for developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). But smokers may not benefit from antioxidant vitamin supplements, say experts.

Emily Chew, MD, Deputy Director, Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Research, National Eye Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, United States, said patients who smoke and take beta carotene supplements have an increased risk of developing lung cancer.

In a presentation to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Dr Chew outlined which patients should and should not take supplements. In a recent study more than 4,700 patients who received supplements of vitamin C and E, beta carotene, zinc and copper and were followed for 6.3 years.

The results of the study showed that while there was a protective benefit for patients with large bilateral macular drusen and those with advanced AMD in one eye, there was no protective benefit for patients with mild and moderate AMD. The supplements did not prevent progression to severe AMD in these patients.

Dr Chew pointed out, however, that the risk of developing AMD in these patients is “exceedingly low,” and therefore, it is unlikely that they would progress to severe AMD.

According to Dr Chew, patients who still smoke, or quit smoking within the past year should avoid the supplements because of the increased risk of cancer. Nor should the offspring of patients with AMD take the supplements, unless they too have AMD in one eye, or large bilateral drusen.

But for most individuals, the benefits of the supplements seem to outweigh any risks. Recently, a meta-analysis of 68 trials reported no significant impact associated with a wide variety of antioxidant supplements. More study is needed, Dr Chew said
Dr Chew concluded that the public health impact of this supplementation regimen could prevent 300,000 people over the next 5 years from either developing advanced macular degeneration or experiencing significant loss of vision as a result of progressive disease.

Arthritis drug banned from sale in UK and Germany

image

London: The drug Prexige (lumiracoxib), used to treat osteoarthritic pain has been suspended from sale by health regulators in the UK and Germany over liver damage fears.

Manufacturer, Novartis, is informing regulatory agencies around the world of these changes, which come after similar actions in other countries in recent months.

Novartis will also comply with a request from the Austrian health authority to suspend sales pending a final decision by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), which reviews medicines in the European Union.

Patients taking Prexige in the UK, Germany, and Austria are advised to consult their medical practitioner.

Prexige was precribed as 100 mg once-daily treatment for osteoarthritic pain following EU approval through the Mutual Recognition Procedure (MRP) in October 2006. Itis also marketed and sold in Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Portugal, and Sweden.

Other EU countries may decide to independently suspend the marketing authorization or sale of Prexige ahead of a decision by the CHMP, which is expected in December.

Prexige is part of a class of drugs known as a COX-2 inhibitors and liver enzyme changes are a known side effect of these and traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

The ban comes The actions in Europe come after an Urgent Safety Restriction was initiated in August 2007 for the Prexige 100 mg dose. Prexige was first withdrawn in August 2007 in Australia where a number of liver side effects were reported, including two deaths, associated with the use of Prexige at doses higher than 100 mg. No deaths have been reported worldwide with the 100 mg dose.
