Swiss unveil new treatment that repairs early dental decay

A British-pioneered dental treatment which halts dental decay  by regenerating tooth enamel may soon be available to patients through the NHS. It has just become available to private dentists in the UK.

The development of Curodont, a liquid remineralisation treatment that is painted onto teeth lesions, at the very start of decay – before any holes have developed – has been made possible by Swiss entrepreneurs and investment.
Packshot small.jpg
At an unveiling event organised at the Swiss Embassy’s Business Hub in London, the room was buzzing with dentists, scientists and NHS big wigs, who had gathered to hear about a treatment which could potentially save billions for the NHS budget – not to mention a big sigh of relief for anyone who hates dentists drills – which I would imagine is most of us!
Curodont, the patented name for the treatment, was developed by scientists at Leeds University.  The most basic explanation is that it is a peptide matrix which when painted onto the tooth sticks to it, creating a scaffold which then attracts enamel building ingredients, such as calcium, from mouth saliva.  In effect the carie, which is the start of decay, is repaired within a 30-day timespan.
Dr Dominik Lysek, CEO of credentis ag, is a chemist, who tells me that they are currently awaiting the green light from the US health watchdog the Food & Drug Administration.  Curodont has already got a European CE mark which means that it complies with all current legislation.
“We didn’t want to market just another new product.  Our aim is to produce an entirely new treatment approach,” he tells me.
Though it is somewhat ironic that all the investment for this UK discovery has come from Switzerland.  “We would not have got funding in the UK,” he says.
One phial of Curodont costs about £40 and can treat three teeth.  Unfortunately, even though it appears fairly cheap, it is not cheap enough to use as a preventative protocol.
Dr Lysek explains that the new remineralisation matrix method  is suitable for treating young patients with an increased risk of caries, for instance because of orthodontic treatment.  And another target group are older people with exposed dentin.

Mary Kay launches new wrinkle repair range at London’s Dorchester

I am seriously impressed with some of the new wrinkle creams coming from the direct sales companies such as Avon and Oriflame and I will be writing about this is more detail here soon.

Dorchester Spa
Dorchester.jpeg
The latest launch is from Mary Kay – a direct sales cosmetic business launched by an entrepreneurial mother with her $5,000 of savings in 1963 and is now a $3bn worldwide business.  You have to admire that don’t you?
This month the company has quietly launched an entire new range of products aimed at the “more interesting lady” – aged 50+ – but these products have such great ingredients that they could be used by much younger customers as a prevention treatment.
Timewise Repair is for ladies (or men for that matter) who want to target deep lines and wrinkles, lift facial contours, restore youthful volume, even skin tone and re-moisturise skin.
Timewise.jpeg
The new products, in the Timewise range (pictured above), include:
  • Foaming Cleanser (£25) – great for reducing pores
  • Day Cream with SPF 30 (£35)
  • Night Treatment with Retinol (£35)
  • Lifting Serum (£50)
  • Eye Renewal Cream (£32)
The products can be bought individually but the launch offer is all five products at a discounted price of £160.
This range not only looks classy with great packaging, also has a novel delivery system – you don’t need to open the lid on the day and night cream just squeeze the top and a little quirts out – so you don’t waste product and it stays hygienic. But the most interesting thing is the anti-wrinkle technology which contains several magic ‘soup of life ‘ ingredients; a peptide, hyaluronic acid and plant stem cells. All three ingredients have been captured into a delivery system which is patented and called Volu-Firm.
The company has backed up its claims with clinical testing (on humans, not animals). In one 12-week study by an independent expert users had the following results using the whole range morning and again at night:
  • 91% had less noticeable deep lines and wrinkles
  • 86% had skin that looked lifted
  • 98% had less under-eye puffiness
  • 93% had more even toned skin
  • 93% had a significant improvement in overall appearance

Persian saffron may hold cure for multiple sclerosis

Toronto: Researchers have found that a substance in Persian saffron may hold the key to reducing nerve inflammation in sufferers of multiple sclerosis.

Persian Saffron.jpeg

In experiments conducted by scientists in Alberta,  the use of a compound called crocin, contained in the saffron,  suppressed both inflammation and certain cell stresses, resulting in decreased neurological impairment in lab models and cell cultures with MS.
The results of the research, recently published in the Journal of Immunology by a group of medical researchers at the University of Alberta have found that an active ingredient in the Persian spice saffron may be used to treat diseases involving neuroinflammation, such as multiple sclerosis.
Chris Powell, from the university said: “We found there is a compound in saffron, known as crocin, that exerts a protective effect in brain cell cultures and other models of MS. It prevented damageto cells that make myelin in the brain.”

CoQ10 taken with selenium reduces cardiovascular death in human trial

Stockholm: A four-year trial of CoQ10 and selenium has revealed a significant reduction in the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease among supple- mented men and women.

CoQ10 structure.jpeg

The study, published in the International Journal of Cardiology, also uncovered a reduction in the cardiac N-terminal proBNP (NT-proBNP), a biomarker of cardiomyocyte wall tension, which is elevated in congestive heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction.
In a double-blinded trial, 228 Swedish citizens received a placebo or 200 micrograms of selenium per day plus 100 milligrams of CoQ10 twice daily for 48 months.
Over 5.2 years of follow-up (which included the four-year treatment period), 5.9% of the supplemented group and 12.6% of the placebo group died of cardiovascular causes, which indi- cated a 54% adjusted risk reduction. Those in the treatment group also had lower levels of NT-proBNP compared to placebo, and better cardiac function as determined by echo- cardiography.
The authors Urban Alehagen and colleagues remark that selenium is essential for the optimal activity of TrxR1, a protein necessary for the effectiveness of CoQ10, which, in turn, is active in several metabolic pathways in the heart. The conclusion is that insufficient levels of either nutrient increases the risk of cardiovascular events.

Hair Wonder – new products to halt hair loss

As the editor of a magazine totally devoted to anti-ageing you would think I would know enough not to mess around with my hormones. Well I have to confess that is exactly what I did, albeit with a little bit of advice from an anti-ageing doctor.  And with bad consequences – two thirds of my hair fell out.

How did this happen you may ask?  Well in common with many woman of a certain age I started to suffer sub-optimal levels of the metabolism controlling hormone made by the thyroid gland but with no particular symptoms. But after a girlfriend, who had none of the symptoms either – she was slim and full of energy – I decided to take a blood test with my GP.  It confirmed that I was indeed short of the hormone and that I should supplement with thyroxine – first a small dose of 0.25mg and then 0.50 mg.
So I supplemented by taking the tiniest of pills first thing in the morning for several years.  Then in a conversation in Harley Street with an anti-ageing doctor,  I was advised to take a freely available supplement called Potassium Iodide – which can be bought on the net. So I started taking this for several months instead of my thyroxine. What I did know was that Potassium Iodide is the supplement you are advised to take if there is a nuclear blast as it protects the thyroid gland from radiation.  Added to which you are only supposed to take it short term as a build up is ‘toxic’.  I did notice after a month or so that I had a metallic taste in my mouth, that the skin on my back felt rough, I was getting strange spots on my face, my neck was swollen and I was having difficulty swallowing – but thought these were symptoms of hypochondria. I later discovered that these were symptoms of ‘toxicity’.
It was only when I ran out of the supplement and didn’t replace it with thyroxine that I suddenly noticed large amounts of hair in the bath plug hole, then all around my home and also it was coming out in handfuls and I was starting to see my scalp! And I had really thick hair which hairdressers always used to comment on….
So I turned to the internet for more information.  And concluded that my sudden hair loss was a symptom of one of the following:
  • Too much testosterone – which meant I was turning into a man and suffering from male-pattern baldness.  This was the worst possible scenario because then it never grows back!
  • It was stress-induced.  That was a possibility and had happened once before.
  • My thyroid was in need of thyroxine to help it function properly and hair loss – albeit temporary was a symptom.
I concluded that my lack of thyroxine was to blame and started taking my tablets again and paid a visit to my GP for a blood test just in case there was something else. I also started eating all the things that help promote hair growth such as fish oils, selenium and tocotrienol (vitamin E).
So what was I to do about my hair disaster while waiting for the thyroxine levels to build up and my hair to grow back which would take several months?
It was suggested that I try hair loss products.  But being sceptical – we have all seen men with those spray on colour thickeners – which sprays the scalp as well as the hair. But I was to learn that there are lots of new products nowr with ingredients that can really help you make the most of your hair when you need to.
anti-hairloss_assortment.jpg
I tried the range from Hair Wonder which is aimed at halting hair loss caused by the menopause and stress, and contains phytokeratin to strengthen the hair and provitamin B5 to add shine.  The range includes shampoos, conditioners and a hair follicle boosting lotion and  a hair thickener.
Surprisingly the one product I thought would be terrible was the one I most recommend –  the hair thickener!  Expecting to end up with hair that looked dull, lifeless and weighed down by the product, I could not have been more wrong.
Hair Wonder’ Henna Plus Fluid Hair Volumiser contains a range of ingredients that add volumn and strength to the hair without making it sticky, including henna, organic extracts and phyto keratin.  After washing your hair your spray it on and then blow dry.  And it does make a difference – OK you don’t get your hair back instantly but it does look and feel a whole lot better.
The Anti-Hair Loss Lotion is also a great product because its applied directly to the scalp to stop further hair loss occuring. Trials in France revealed that it can increase hair growth by 25% in just four days.
The gloss shampoo is gentle and contains amino acids, Red ginseng and biotin to promote healthy hair follicles and gloss.
Whilst I realise that hair loss is often a symptom of a health issue that cannot always be sorted with a topical product, the range of Hair Wonder products does not contain any of the harsh ingredients that can make hair condition worse. It does help to give body, volume and shine which is a big step in the right direction when hair loss can be very distressing.  And they are not being sold at the rip-off prices.
I can only speak for my hair which is on the road to recovery – with a little help!
The anti-hair loss shampoo costs £9.99 (200ml), the hair lotion £16.99 (75ml) and the hair thickener £7.99 (150ml). There are several other products in the range.  Buy at www.naturalorigin.com

Gym bags causing injury to millions, according to new research

New research shows nearly 2 million (36%)* UK gym goers need to lighten the load after suffering from back and neck pains at least once a week as a result of carrying heavy work and gym bags. The Saucony Kinvara 3** poll shows the array of unnecessary items fitness fans lug around on a daily basis is negating the benefits of their exercise routines by putting their postures at risk of long term damage.

pain.jpeg

A quarter carry around batteries (27%), fruit (53%), hair straighteners (17%) and even children’s toys (11%) in their gym bags. While over half refuse to leave home without a spare pair of pants (54%) or emergency toilet roll (16%).

Vanity and hygiene were also to blame for weighing down bags, with 5 million UK gym goers (97%) carrying 5-10 products just for grooming and beauty. One in ten of those surveyed admitted to leaving clothing in their gym bags for 1-2 months. Meanwhile twice the amount of men (15%) compared to women (8%) confessed to leaving unwashed clothing festering for a fortnight.

“We need to get the Nation back to basics when it comes to running. Forget expensive gym memberships or lugging around heavy bags – lightweight running gear and minimalist trainers are all you need. The Saucony Kinvara 3 is an award-winning training shoe that is so lightweight, just 220g***, you can get rid of all these random items and just run!” said Jonathan Quint, Marketing Manager for Saucony UK and Ireland.

random1.png random2.png

The UK regions needing to simplify their stride:

Gym goers in the East Midlands experience neck and back pain most frequently, with 47% suffering at least once a week, compared to just 23% in the East of England

The pampering products of Londoners are damaging postures the most with 10% of gym goers carrying between 15-25 grooming/beauty products with them

The East Midlands are the most hair-conscious with 23% weighing bags down with hairdryers, compared to just 4% of those from the North East

Nick Anderson, Saucony Coaching Ambassador and founder of fitness coaching company Running With Us, gives his top tips for getting back to basics when running…

1.     A good posture is your best ally to avoid neck and back pains.  Always stand tall with a very slight forward lean, your chest out, shoulders back and imagine your head is being pulled up towards the sky by a cord

2.     Tension in the shoulder or neck caused by heavy bags will put additional stress on the upper posture leading to headaches, muscular tightness and ultimately, poor performance.  Avoid that trip to the osteopath by keeping your kit to a minimum

3.     If you must carry a small bag, choose a running rucksack that binds in across the body and fits tightly against the middle of the back as you run. Have it strapped on evenly at all times and make sure it doesn’t move while you run

4.     There are lots of great running clubs out there that take your bags for you, such as www.homerunlondon.com

Wake-up to being healthier this winter with the new Lumie lights

It’s amazing the effect that light, and different colours and spectrums have on human health. It’s probably worthy of a novel or at the very least a thesis. But Lumie, the world-leading experts in light and seasonal affective disorder, have cleverly come up with a new device that can help us through the dull winter months.

The Lumie Bodyclock Go 75 (pictured below) is a wake-up light – you set it to wake you up with the sunrise (or whenever you wish), naturally resetting your sleep/wake cycle to help you feel fresh and alert.  And it comes with wake up sounds such as birds song. And also portable so you can take it with you on your travels.
images-1.jpeg
What I didn’t know before was the range of health issues that sleep deprivation and/or not getting enough light can cause. This includes obesity and also changes in metabolism that can lead to diabetes and heart disease.
Dr Victoria Revell, an expert in studying the human circadian system (human sleep) at the Surrey Clinical Research Centre at the University of Surrey says that we are all getting less sleep than ever – typically we would get 9 hours but now its down to 7.5.
Added to which – the dreaded impact of ageing – which apparently means that the outer layer of our eyeballs gets thicker so light finds it harder to penetrate and the pupils shrinks – so goodness knows why everything else shrinks – like bones and lips!
Lumie has lots of data and has also worked with our Olympic athletes – who typically have to train at odd hours – because we don’t have facilities for them at normal times and they do ‘day’ jobs – and proven that performance is enhanced with the right light.
One other not so funny thing I  discovered is that 17% of the UK workforce – works at night – that about 4.1 million people – who will all have disrupted sleep patterns. And – I am guilty of this one – spending the evenings at my computer – because that can make you stay awake all night. Hmm I wondered what it was – thought it was my vivid imagination!

Lifestyle keeps you active in older years

London:  Positive lifestyle choices can pave the way for a healthy old age, new research has discovered.

Fotolia_9734660_XS-2.jpgA study of more than 5,000 people, in Britain and France, aged from 42 to 63, revealed individual behaviours such as staying active, had a small benefit.

Researcher Dr Siverine Sabia, from the University College London, said the study revealed that  the cumulative impact of healthy behaviours on successful ageing – the greater the number of healthy behaviours, the greater the benefit.

Those who were active, ate fruit and vegetables, didn’t smoke and limited their alcohol had the best chance of enjoying n active old age. Participants who engaged in all four behaviours had more than triple the chance of enjoying a healthy old age compared with those who engaged in none.

The study lexamined the records of 5,100 men and women who did not have cancer, heart disease or stroke in the assessment phase during 1991-1994. Those still alive were then re-assessed in 2007-2009.  Of the total participants, 549 had died during follow-up, 953 were classified as successfully ageing while the remaining people aged normally.

Successful agers were more likely to have a higher education than the normally ageing group – 32 per cent against 24 per cent – and 18 per cent in the deceased group.

In the study population, five per cent of people did not engage in any of the four healthy behaviours.

Dr Sabia said: ‘Although individual healthy behaviours are moderately associated with successful ageing, their combined impact is quite substantial.

‘Multiple healthy behaviours appear to increase the chance of reaching old age disease-free and fully functional in an additive manner.’

Ageless with Thailand’s magical medi-spa treats

Bangkok: Thailand is known for its stunning natural beauty, including tropical islands, beautiful beaches and World Hertitage ranked historical sites. It’s also a place where visitors can indulge in City fun including huge shopping malls, top night spots and five star luxury hotels.
But there is another tourist hotspot – the country’s medical health facilities which are ranked 47th by the World Health Organisation. And just to put the ranking in perspective that’s compared to the UK (18th) and the US (37).  Added to which most doctors have US, UK or European medical qualifications, with specialisms in all kinds of treatments from transplants to dental and cosmetic surgery.
Of course the main reason why1.5 million tourists, mainly from Japan, US, UK and Australia, visit the country seeking medical treatment is because on average it costs a tenth of the price. The standard of care is very high with hospitals equipped with the latest technology and delivering quality customer services, including professonionals who speak a number of languages including English and Japanese. So no surprise its so popular a destination for medical tourism, earning the country more than US$3.lbn in revenues last year.
So while the Thai shopping experience is unmatched,  with excellent bargains in clothing and accessories, as well as the usual souvenirs, medical tourism is flourishing. So while it may be a long way to go, patients have the opportunity, depending of course on their treatment, to indulge in other positive lifestyle choices such as Thai massage and aesthetic rejuvenation during their stay.
Elixir recently sent reporter, Diana McSherry, to Thailand to  investigate whether the country’s medical tourism offering lived up to its reputation.  Her report which follows focuses on the Bangkok Hospital, which has one of the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art facilities.  It also looks as facilities for rest and relaxation at Amari hotels. This is her report:
“The Bangkok Hospital is a shiny, welcoming and technologically sophisticated hospital, with its own air ambulance and helipad, adjacent to one of the newest additions to the luxury Amari group of hotels.  Anyone who has stayed in one of these beautiful Amari Residences Bangkok, knows that they are very beautiully decorated, utilising local sustainable natural materials, with plenty of dark wood.
    012-Studio - bedroom area and bathroom.jpg

A typical room at the Amari Residences Bangkok – popular with patients following treatment
However, the Amari Residences Bangkok where I stayed on this occasion are in  a more airy and brighter style of decor, providing a lighter atmosphere in the centre of the city, for the many international medical visitors choosing it for convalescence.
And, as an aside, despite what you might have heard about the thronging hoards in Bangkok, there are many places in the city where peace and quiet can be found: the hospital and adjacent hotel are in one of these spots.
I opted for a Supreme health check, following an essential fast which seemed to last days but was in reality only eight hours. The experience was very different from what I expected. The hospital has such an air of informality and comfort – more akin to a five star hotel –  that even while you and everyone you can see is dressed in blue cotton pyjamas anxiously awaiting their next bout of prodding and poking, there is still an air of geniality and no foreboding smell of antiseptic.
    100823023605613.jpg

The Bangkok Hospital with its air ambulance helipad
There is definitely a reassuring retro feel to the whole experience. The delicately boned and beautiful Thai nurses are dressed in a traditional uniform, with starched white shirts and skirts, neatly pinned hair with little hair-grips and nurse’s cap (pictured below).
    nurses.jpeg
    Supreme Health Check
The Supreme health check package, includes all the standard organ function tests and a gynaecological check, the cost of which is far less that you would pay for the same checks at home (full list is included at the end of this article).
I felt slightly nervous waiting around in the reception area – but this is not the run-of-the mill waiting area you get in most hospitals.  It is  fabulously decorated – not like our crowded and stressed hospitals at home. Eventually after four  hours my results were produced and I was called in to see the doctor to discuss them.
After close inspection of most of the organs which had accompanied me from birth, unseen until this special moment, I braced myself for the doctor’s health recommendations. ‘All fine!’ she proclaimed with a smile. The good doctor then lectured me gently on the subject of my high BMI, nothing I hadn’t heard before. I told her that I would lose weight and actually meant it this time.
While I ate my first morsel of food for the day, International Medical Coordinator Dr Michael Moreton who is from the UK, explained his role at this flagship hospital. Around 38-40% of patients admitted to the hospital for various treatments are foreign, so Dr Moreton’s role is to make sure they are all happy with the level of treatment they receive in Thailand.
Dr Moreton studied medicine in Liverpool and spent nine years practising in China, so has a wealth of international experience to draw from. The hospital is fully prepared for international visitors, having a full interpretation service and contracts to treat patients with organisations in neighbouring countries.
The hospital provides many services, including a skin and aesthetics centre, a comprehensive spine centre, an anti-aging medicine centre and clinics providing assistance in acupuncture, hair restoration and travel medicine.
    Manit__13962.jpg
The Royal Anti-Ageing Clinic at Bangkok Hospital – where the doctors look like they have been taking their own medicine!
    v>

The hospital’s Royal Anti-ageing Clinic offers various medical protocols designed to return the body to optimum levels by creating a supplement programme of vitamins, micronutrients, antioxidants and hormones that may be depleting too rapidly due to lifestyle, diet, or genetic factors. It also has a range of aesthetic treatments.
Dr Moreton pointed out that the biggest draw for people in the UK (as well as the costs) are the much reduced waiting times for surgeries such as hip and knee replacements. The same level of duty of care is available to patients who travel Thailand for treatment as they would get in their own countries, in terms of physician insurance or filing a legal complaint.  Going above and beyond legal requirements, Bangkok Hospital does incur all fees related to flying a patient back to Bangkok if they need a corrective procedure.
Bangkok Hospital Health Check Packages include:

    • Premium/Supreme check up (package price) 7,800 Baht or £159
    • Ultimate check up (package price) men: 12,700 Baht or £258
    • Ultimate check up (package price) women: 17,700 or £360
Note: Prices based on current exchange rate of 1 GBP to 49 THB. These may vary due to currency fluctuation and date of visit etc
The supreme health check up (for people aged 30-45) which I sampled includes:
    • Examination by Doctor
    • Hearing screening
    • Complete blood count
    • Blood sugar
    • Liver function test
    • Kidney function test
    • Gout screening
    • Lipid screening
    • Urine Analysis

Sun and Sand at the Amari Coral Beach Phuket
An added bonus for people flying from the UK is the proximity of the beautiful relaxation destinations in Thailand, where many choose to recuperate before flying home. There you have time to soak in some of the more rural beauty of the country after the bustle of Bangkok.
    6.jpg
    The Amari Coral Beach Pool
One of the best places for post-surgery relaxation, is the island of Phuket, where we stayed at the Amari Coral Beach in Phuket. There are plenty of tucked away hotels and areas in which relaxation and recuperation is easy to achieve. You need not do anything apart from sit on your hotel balcony or the beach and while the hours away looking at the beautiful scenery, or visiting a spa. There are also plenty of activities if you are not recovering from surgery, including coast tours and exploring the surprisingly undervalued capital, Phuket Town.
As well as the highest of standards, the Thai people treat service as a pleasure to give others so the staff at the hospital and hotels are incredibly helpful.
    Cosmetic surgery facts in Thailand
You may be surprised to learn that the cosmetic surgery most popular with Thai ladies is the humble nose job. This might have something to do with the fact that it is almost indecently cheap (and safe) to have done, but mainly (as a beautiful Thai lady told me) it is the quest for western beauty features.  She said that if I saw anyone with a high bridge to their nose it was more than likely that it had been surgically enhanced. She confided that she herself had the operation 10 years ago when the recovery was more complicated and painful than it is today.
    Thai massage
Even a medium strength massage has quite large aspects of pain in Thailand, so I avoided the full massage at the Breeze Spa and opted for something a little less strenuous but still heard the sound of muscles screaming for mercy. That night I had the deepest and most restful sleep I had experienced for quite some time.
    Buddhism and Thailand
Buddhism is, of course, an integral part of life in Thailand and seems to colour every aspect of it. The Thai people are very serene and kind and strongly guided by their beliefs – displays of anger are very much frowned upon. Many men train as a monk at some point in their lives and then are free to leave when they wish, often to get married. You cannot fail but be moved by their devotion to Buddha. Their temples and associated buildings are breathtaking, the most ornate and colourful buildings you would ever have the pleasure to see in your life. I couldn’t help but think that most of us may be  tempted to go to church more if the buildings had been as stunning as these! The air of calm and reverence within the temples was unmistakeable, even when filled with scurrying and swarming tourists.

    Buddha small.jpg

Don’t miss seeing the many representations of Buddha. The golden Buddha (housed at Wat Traimit) is 5.5 tonnes of solid gold. The emerald Buddha, housed in his own temple within the Grand Palace, is made of Jade and sports a different outfit for each season. For us, the most stunning Buddha image was the reclining Buddha, filling the length of the temple with exquisite (and massive) mother of pearl inlaid feet. If you journey down to Phuket, you will see the largest Buddha image in Thailand – the appropriately named ‘Giant Buddha of Phuket’. We happened to visit the giant Buddha during the evening call to prayer – I doubt I will ever forget the sound of dozens of monks chanting as the sun began to set.

In Thailand you will be required to cover your shoulders (even at the outdoor site of the Giant Buddha) and take your shoes off to enter any temple. There will be a designated area in front of the Buddha image for worshippers to kneel and pray on – there is no standing in this area!

Although Ragdale Hall was opened as a health farm in 1973, it is the multi-million pound renovation, which was opened in 2007, that has put it on the map.  From the exterior, it is Victorian architecture.  The interior is contemporary luxury.
    exterior-on-a-cloudy-day.jpg
It has been re-named as a Health Hydro and Thermal Spa with good reason.  There are five pools with the option to exercise or simply relax with massage jets, foot spas and waterfalls to relieve your aches and ease your mind.

Bobbi Brown reveals her anti-ageing makeup secrets

    BB.jpeg

    Bobbi Brown
“Over-forty beauty is based on taking care of yourself and feeling good. Don’t focus on how you used to look but focus on yourself as you are now, advises Bobbi.

    Bobbi.jpg

The new look for autumn above – Pretty Powerful for the Uber woman!
“Leading a healthy lifestyle makes me feel better- and that’s a great confidence booster!

“Make sure your skin is well hydrated. Regular exfoliation will help skin shed dry layers, but there is nothing better than adding serious moisture to the skin. It literally plumps up the skin to fill lines out a bit. Use Bobbi Brown Extra Moisturising Balm to rehydrate and firm dry skim
Concealer is an older woman’s best friend
“The area around the eye will start getting noticeably drier, so using an eye cream is essential before applying Concealer.

“Concealer is the one product that I feel most dramatically improves a woman’s appearance.  Concealer is the best way to lighten dark circles to look rested- even when you are not – and it magically brightens up the face.

    Banish the red
“You will definitely start to see more red tones in your skin than you did in your 20’s or 30’s, so a good foundation becomes worth its weight in gold. The trick is to find a yellow toned foundation that evens out your skin, disguises redness and still looks completely natural.

Plump up the lips with subtle shades
“Lips can be plumped up by wearing a medium to light colour. Too-dark shades will make them look even smaller. Give your lips extra definition, and the most natural look, by lining your lips after you apply your lipstick. To avoid emphasizing fine lines around the mouth, use an emollient (but not greasy) moisturizer on that area.
    Shimmer – sometimes!
“Shimmer can look great on women of all ages. As we age and our skin becomes more dehydrated there’s nothing like the right shade and placement of just enough shimmer to add youthful dewiness and radiance. If you wear too much however or use it in too many places, it can look garish and even make you appear older than you are.
“Avoid wearing shimmer in areas where you are broken out or shiny, since it also emphasizes these problems. It’s also a good idea to stay away from products with glitter in them as they can settle into fine lines and wrinkles and call more attention to them. But don’t let these potential pitfalls scare you off.”
GET THE BOBBI BROWN AUTUMN LOOK – UBER BASICS COLLECTION
Inspired by Bobbi’s seventh book, Pretty Powerful, she introduces the Uber Basics Collection – shades for every woman.  This collection will give every woman – no matter what her skin ton – the essentials she needs to go from Pretty to Pretty Powerful, day to night.  Highlighting the simplicity of Bobbi’s Uber Basic Look, the collection comprises Eye Shadows, Sparkle Eye Shadows, Blushes, Rich Lip Colours and High Shimmer Lip Glosses.
    Eye Shadow

    Rich Lip Colour
    Bobbi Lipsticks.png
Rich Colour Lipstick is a lightweight and incredibly emollient lip colour formula.  The colourless and translucent base, coupled with a special gel system allows for intense colour release and true colour projection.  The soft, smooth texture melts onto lips for a truly comfortable wear that lasts for hours.  Its in four great colours Uber Pink, Uber Beige, Uber Suede and Uber Nude Beige. Costs £18.
     High Shimmer Lip Gloss
    Bobbi Glosses.png
This formula features a special mix of pearls in a clear base for the ultinate in shimmer, shine, and colour. Plus it’s good for lips, thanks to moisturising emollients and vitamins C and E, which condition and offer antioxidant protection. High shimmer lip gloss is perfect for a night out on the town, special occasions, or simply when you are in the mood for something fabulous. Comes in Uber Suede (Limited Edition), Patel, Bare Sparkle and Naked Plum. Costs £17.

Scientists harvest living stem cells from dead

Scientists have harvested stem cells from the scalps and brain linings of human corpses and reprogrammed them into stem cells.
    Stems.jpeg
Their discovery – that  dead people can yield living cells that can be converted into any cell or tissue in the body, has been recognised with the Nobel Prize.
The researchers believe that this discovery could lead to new stem cell therapies for the treatment of mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, autism and bipolar disorder, which may stem from problems with development.
Mature cells can be made or induced to become immature cells, known as pluripotent stem cells, which have the ability to become any tissue in the body and potentially can replace cells destroyed by disease or injury.
Cadaver-collected stem cells are collected from fibroblasts (skin cells) and can be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells using chemicals known as growth factors that are linked with stem cell activity.
Reprogrammed cells could then develop into a multitude of cell types, including the neurons found in the brain and spinal cord.
Now scientists have taken fibroblasts from the scalps and the brain linings of 146 human brain donors and grown induced pluripotent stem cells from them as well.
Researcher Thomas Hyde, a neuroscientist, neurologist and chief operating officer at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development in Baltimore said that they were now able to culture living cells from the deceased  on a far larger scale than previously.
The bodies had been dead up to nearly two days before scientists collected tissues from them. The corpses had been kept cool in the morgue, but not frozen. The researchers found fibroblasts taken from the brain lining, or dura mater, were 16 times more likely to grow successfully than those from the scalp. This was expected, since the scalp is prone to fungal and bacterial contamination just like any other part of the skin.
These contaminants can ruin any attempt to grow fibroblasts in lab dishes.
Surprisingly, scalp cells did proliferate more and grew more rapidly than dura mater cells.
“This makes sense — the skin is constantly renewing, while the turnover in dura mater is much slower,” Dr Hyde said.
    Future therapies
Cells from corpses might play a key role in developing future stem cell therapies. Successfully reprogramming induced pluripotent stem cells so they behave like the cells they are meant to replace means that samples of the mimicked cells must be present for comparison. Cadavers can provide brain, heart and other tissues for study that researchers cannot safely obtain from living people.
“For instance, we can compare neurons derived from fibroblasts with actual neurons from the same individual,” Hyde said. “It tells us about how reliable a given method for deriving neurons from fibroblasts is. That can be crucial if, for example, you want to create dopamine-making neurons to treat someone with Parkinson’s disease.”
Studying how induced pluripotent stem cells develop into various tissues could also shed light on disorders that are due to malfunctions in development.
“We’re very interested in major neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disease, autism and mental retardation,” Hyde said. “By understanding what goes wrong with the brain cells in these individuals, we could perhaps help fix that.”

The shocking state of UK home cleanliness, revealed by new Zoflora study

ZOFLORA, the home cleanliness experts, mark 90 years of keeping British homes armed against nasty bugs and bacteria. Their little bottles of household disinfectant have become one of the nation’s favourites since the company’s founding in 1922. Below you can see photos of how the range has changed over time.
    Zoflora range shot small.jpg
But have the nation’s cleaning habits changed since then?  Well according to a recent study by Zoflora, we are still at risk, with our homes “a hotbed of potentially dangerous bacteria and viruses with all too many people failing to eliminate them through proper cleaning.”
Bacteria and viruses can trigger sometimes serious health problems unless they are eliminated from surfaces around the house. The World Health Organisation says that about 40% of food-related outbreaks occur in the home.
To paint a picture of the attitudes and habits of householders when it comes to cleanliness and tidiness, Zoflora commissioned a study of 2,000 adults from across the UK. Ninety percent of study respondents admitted their homes were not clean with just 5% noting their home was spotlessly clean and 6% highlighting that they were immaculately tidy.
Two thirds (66%) of us reckon our homes should be cleaner than they are.
One in five (19%) of us admit our homes are not clean at all.
    Dirty dish cloth shock
The same research also found that 20% of people clean with the same cloth for over a fortnight without disinfecting it or replacing it and wet cloths are one of the biggest breeding grounds for microbes in the home!

    Smells…
In the same Zoflora research study, just two in 10 (20%) correctly agreed with the statement that ‘a bad smell in the house meant that surfaces were unhygienic’. By far, the two most common causes of unpleasant household smells were old food in the bin (20%) and pets (20%). Other reasons included young children and toilet smells.
However, when asked what they did when they had a bad smell in the home, less than one quarter of people (23%) said they would clean the location or cause of the bad smell. Other ways of dealing with the smell included opening windows (25%), burning a fragrant candle (19%) and spraying perfume or even deodorant around the home (7%). However, while scents can mask a smell they don’t address the cause of the problem, leaving potentially harmful bacteria lurking and multiplying.

    Mess...
Very few people are happy with an untidy and unclean house.
One third (33%) said it made them feel stressed
    20% felt anxious
    13% felt depressed.
The aspects that worry people the most about having an untidy or messy home are that others may come round and see an unclean house (28%) or that the clutter makes them feel trapped (28%). Just 16% are most worried that it could be unhygienic. Just under one-third of people (32%) admit that having an unclean house can keep them awake at night. Of these people four in five (81%) have got up at some time between midnight and 4am.
Fewer than one in ten (8%) said they employed a cleaner, with the most common reason not to have one being given as not being able to afford one (46%).
Nearly a quarter (23%) said that pride stopped them from having a cleaner and they were quite capable of looking after their own home while 17% said they did not like the idea of a stranger in their home.
Of those with a cleaner, more than half (60%) said they cleaned around the house a bit before the cleaner arrived because they were embarrassed about the state of their home.
    The importance of fragrance
The majority of people like rooms to smell good (71%), and nearly one in five (18%) said they would walk out of a room if it had a bad smell. A quarter of people (26%) said that smell affected their mood. When it comes to scent choices, the Zoflora research study found that:
Linen fresh is the most popular choice of how people would like their homes to smell, followed by:
    ¥ Warm Cinnamon
    ¥ Citrus Fresh
    ¥ Lavender
    ¥ Cherry Blossom
Zoflora fragrance and home bacteria expert, Nicola Hobbs notes: “Our homes are fertile breeding grounds for bacteria to grow and multiply. Common microbes found in our houses include ‘superbug’ methicillin – resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and bacteria like Campylobacter, a common source of food poisoning. A study commissioned by Zoflora found that a shower head had 300,000 times more bacteria than a set of front door keys – bacteria thrive in warm, damp places. Research has shown that flushing a toilet sends a spray of water droplets into the air which may be contaminated with bacteria and viruses, and that these germs can float around in the bathroom for at least two hours after each flush before landing on surfaces. A study of 60 kitchens where raw chicken was prepared found that bacteria were frequently spread around – and that cleaning with detergent and hot water had little effect compared with the cleaning action of a disinfectant.
“There is no getting away from it: homes are havens for bacteria. That said, with the right cleaning routine and the best products, bacteria needn’t be left to thrive to the point where they become a health hazard. It’s important to clean the home regularly
and frequently and use a disinfectant that is proven to work on bacteria and viruses. Bad smells can be an important sign of bacteria present on a surface or area in the house, so it’s crucial it’s dealt with properly. Simply masking the smell with an air freshener or other scents is no good – it’s crucial the cause of the problem is tackled thoroughly.
“The good news is that if you use Zoflora as a disinfectant as part of your cleaning routine, you can not only be confident that it will kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses but also that it will banish any unwanted odours and leave a long-lasting freshness. Having a really clean and fragrant house needn’t be onerous or expensive. It is simply a matter of choosing the right product, and longevity of Zoflora – now celebrating its 90th anniversary – shows that it has been, and still is, trusted by many to do just that job.”
    Guest habits…
Around one-third of participants in the survey (36%) had found that visitors had started cleaning their home without being asked, most commonly a parent or parent-in-law. More than half (56%) of those affected in this way didn’t mind, but a further 20% thought it ‘a bit odd’ and 21% were upset or angry. Over half of those surveyed (58%) said they asked people to take off their shoes when they visited. Over a quarter (27%) say they always take their shoes off in other people’s homes and another quarter (24%) do so when they remember. Nearly one-third (31%) take them off if prompted but a stubborn 18% say they try not to or even refuse outright.

One in six aged over 50 lives in isolation, says new report

One in six people in England aged over 50 are ‘socially isolated’, according to a new report.
    olderpeople.jpg
They have few friends and little other social engagement, says the latest report by the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), a project that aims to understand the economic, social, psychological and health concerns of an ageing society.
The ELSA report revealed that the least wealthy over-fifties suffer the most social isolation, with the wealthier among the same age group half as likely to become socially isolated, compared to the least wealthy.
The report suggests that much of the problem is caused by dwindling financial resources and that focussing public health intervention efforts on less wealthy, less healthy older people and on improving access to public and private transport for the over-50’s is likely to have the greatest impact in alleviating social isolation.
The ELSA project is an extensive research study that follows the lives of more than 10,000 English people throughout their older age and which reveals the complex inter-relationships between personal finances, social detachment and overall health and well-being.

Previous reports from the project have shown how social engagement is closely linked with long life and healthy ageing. The current findings come from the fifth report of ELSA, which is led by researchers at University College London (UCL) and which is carried out in partnership with researchers at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the University of Manchester and NatCen Social Research.
One of ELSA’s goals was to determine whether measuring psychological well-being at a younger age could predict a person’s risk of later developing poor health and suffering an earlier death. Subjects were first visited in 2002/03 (wave one) and again most recently in 2010/11 (wave five).
Inadequate transportation for those over-50 leave them feeling lonely
Those who were recorded as having a greater enjoyment of life in wave one were more likely to still be alive nine to 10 years later than were other participants. The difference between those who enjoyed life the most and those who enjoyed life the least was marked, with nearly three times more people dying in the lower than greater enjoyment group.
Researchers also found that measures of psychological well-being that were taken in 2004/05 (wave two) could be used to predict which previously unaffected individuals would go on to suffer disability, reduced walking speed, impaired self-rated health, and to develop coronary heart disease by the time they were visited again in 2010/11.
ELSA coordinator Professor Andrew Steptoe, British Heart Foundation Professor of Psychology and director of the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care at UCL, said: ‘These remarkable findings became even more astonishing when it became clear that the link between psychological well-being and long term health and survival was independent of other factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, wealth, education and baseline health.’
Women are more likely to become detached from leisure activities than men
The report also found evidence that a significant number of people over recent years have been retiring gradually, rather than abruptly ceasing work. Almost half of men and a third of women aged 60 to 64 years who are in receipt of private pension income are still in work; and these people on average work fewer hours than those who have yet to start drawing their private pensions.
Among those who have retired over the last decade, average post-retirement family net income fell to 72 per cent of average pre-retirement income. Those in the top quarter of pre-retirement income experience the biggest post-retirement percentage decrease (down 40 per cent).
Prof Steptoe added: ‘We also found social detachment is more common among individuals who never married or have been separated/divorced or widowed than members of couples.
‘Men, those living alone and those living in rural areas are less likely to remain in regular contact with friends and family.
‘Mobility problems are associated with a withdrawal from leisure activities and cultural engagement, as is losing access to transport.
‘Women are more likely to become detached from leisure activities than men, but less likely to become detached from social networks; while widowed individuals are less likely to withdraw from leisure activities, cultural engagement and, in particular, social networks than those in a couple.’
ELSA began in 2002 and visits volunteer participants every two years. This is the fifth biennial report.

Killer skin cancer zapped in new BMI treatment

Dermatologists are seeing an upsurge in skin cancer amongst older people as a result of sunbathing at an earlier age.  In this case study, 66-year-old David discovered he had a dangerous face cancer.

As a lover of ‘the great outdoors’ David has long been aware of the dangers of too much sun and has been plastering on sun cream for years.

Unfortunately,  in David’s case, the damage was done long before Factor 50 became fashionable and now, after just having a dangerous cancer removed from his face, he is warning others in his age group to keep a close eye on their skin.

Sixty-six-year-old David was treated at BMI Manor Hospital in Biddenham by consultant dermatologist Anton Alexandroff in a procedure that took less than 90 minutes.

But things could have been much different if he hadn’t acted quickly when the growth appeared on his cheek just below his eye. It turned out to be a squamous cell carcinoma which, if left untreated, can spread around body, initially in nearby glands, and can be a killer.

David, who lives in of Tempsford, Bedfordshire, with wife Juliet, had already left the growth a couple of weeks, thinking it was just a bite or a scratch that had gone septic.

But he finally arranged to see Dr Alexandroff through his BUPA health insurance, and found that immediate action was necessary.

    Dr Anton Alexandroff

“Because this cancer is so dangerous I removed it on the very same day. It was over 4mm thick and I considered it high risk,” said Dr Alexandroff.

David explained: “I was going on holiday the following day so I asked if I could be booked in after that. However Dr Alexandroff simply said ‘let’s do it now’ and 90 minutes later I was on my way home minus a skin cancer! It really was that easy.”

“I have to admit that at first I was a bit surprised because, as a typical fair-skinned Scotsman, I have always had sensitive skin so I have always been careful about using creams and keeping covered up in the sun.

“However, it seems the damage was one when I was just a boy – long before high factor sun creams were in use. In those days if you got burned you used calamine lotion to ease the pain rather than creams to prevent the burning in the first place!

“If it happened to me then it will have happened to many others in my age group and I am warning people that no matter how careful they are now they need to be on the lookout for moles or blemishes that could be cancerous.

“My case showed just how quickly they can be treated if they are spotted early enough.”

Dr Alexandroff added: “The rate of skin cancers is on the increase and unfortunately every year we see more and more skin tumours – not only in older people but also in middle age group and even in younger patients.

It is extremely important to be careful with sun protection from an early age onwards, because sun-damage accumulates with time and increases the risk of skin cancers later in life.

“In particular it is a good idea to keep kids well covered – a broad-brimmed hat, long sleeves, long trousers or a long skirt are always good and choose a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher and re-apply it every two hours.”

111SKIN by Dr Yannis Alexandrides MD

111SKIN is the culmination of cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Alexandrides’ long standing  commitment to helping his patients defy the signs of ageing.

This new product uses what space scientists’ learned looking for ingredients that limit the effect of environmental damage on skin – whether in space, high altitude or urban conditions.

The main active ingredients in 111SKIN were developed by Bulgarian space scientists for their astronauts. As the largest organ of the body and its main protector, skin already has a difficult task. If we add common environmental stresses – UV rays, wind, pollution and free radicals – that job becomes more challenging and the cumulative effect is ageing, lacklustre skin.

    11Skingroupsmall.jpg

111SKIN targets the problem on a cellular level, complementing your body’s defence system by using a patent pending formula, NAC Y2. This formula combines NAC , Vitamin C and Escin. NAC and Vitamin C are the essential building blocks that increase Glutathione, the most vital antioxidant in our cells that is responsible for protecting skin from environmental extremes. Escin, another potent antioxidant, increases blood circulation, promotes stronger collagen production and helps transport NAC Y2 and Vitamin C directly to cells.

Together, these powerful ingredients detoxify, hydrate and regenerate skin cells, working from within to strengthen skin and fight damaging environmental elements. When used daily, skin becomes younger looking, more supple and more radiant.

The key product in the range is the Y Theorem Nac Y2 Facial Repair Serum (£190 for 30m) which sinks deep into the skin.  It has a powerful combination of the NAC Y2 formula with Aminocaproic Acid, hydrolyzed Collagen and 20 key amino acids which specifically boost collagen production, helping to increase cell generation and skin elasticity. We also tried the Facelift Day Cream and loved that too (£130 for 50ml).  I

We tried both the skin and the eye serums.  Only a little needs to be used.  It glides on.  And the effect is almost  immediate.  In particular, the eye serum, has a lifting and tightening effect which you can see a few minutes later. A five star product.

These products are expensive but the quality of the ingredients is so good that you only need a little amount.  The ingredients are also kept fresh as they are in an airtight pump dispenser. Its exclusively on sale at Harrods currently and also through 111 Harley Street.
