Binge drinking increases stroke risk, say doctors

London: Binge drinkers double their risk of suffering a stroke, say doctors. But two out of three people questioned in a survey were unaware that binge drinking can trigger the condition.

The Stroke Association report also shows that one in two adults will binge drink over Christmas and they are twice as likely to suffer than those who don’t drink.

Jon Barrick, chief executive of the association, said: ‘Anyone can have a stroke, so binge drinkers are increasing their risk of an attack.

‘People are clearly aware that they should exercise control over the amount of alcohol they consume, but over half of those surveyed reveal they still binge drink on an average night out.

‘If this leads to a stroke, it could have extremely seriously consequences such as long-term disabilities or even death.’

Every year 130,000 people have a stroke, with 10,000 under retirement age, while nearly 60,000 people will die as a result.

The latest warning comes as European statistics, due to be released next week, show teenage girls have for the first time overtaken boys in the levels of UK binge drinking.

The Stroke Association survey of 1,909 adults across the UK found a lack of understanding among the public about what constitutes binge drinking.

Three quarters underestimated the recommended daily limits of alcohol for men and women, with just 22 per cent understanding the daily limits of between three and four units for men and two and three units for women.

Around half said they drank four or more alcoholic drinks – six units – which constitutes binge drinking, but only 29 per cent considered themselves to be a binger.

The survey also found that young people aged between 25 and 34 were most likely to consume 10 or more alcoholic drinks a night.

Just 40 per cent thought binge drinking could lead to a stroke, with the majority worried about dehydration and liver damage.

And 57 per cent of those surveyed said they planned to binge drink over the Christmas period.

Meanwhile, an advertising campaign unveiled on Wednesday by drinks watchdog the Portman Group is targeting female binge drinkers.

Brazil nut ban by European Commission

London: Millions of families will miss out on a longstanding Christmas tradition this year as supermarkets refuse to stock Brazil nuts.

The nuts, popular with afternoon tea around the Christmas tree, have been judged a potential safety risk by the European Commission.

Traces of a toxin that can cause liver cancer have been found in their shells. So the EC has decreed every batch imported from Brazil must be tested for the substance aflatoxin.

Supermarkets claim the cost of destroying any shipments would be too high and are not willing to import them.

Brazil nut kernels, used in nut mixtures and chocolate Brazil nuts, can still be imported from Bolivia and Peru.

But the Combined Edible Nut Trade Association said that Brazil is the only country to export the nuts in the shell.

‘Commercially it is now too risky to import them. The EU have put overly stringent limits on this without really good evidence,’ said the association’s chairman Peter Morgan.

The European limit on aflatoxin levels in Brazil nuts is four parts per billion but Mr Morgan said the U.S. limit is 15 parts per billion.

EC officials say levels 100 times higher than the limit have been found. They fear the substance, caused by contaminating fungi, could pass from the shell to the nut, and then be consumed.

A spokesman said: ‘We would like to lift the restrictions but we are not yet satisfied the Brazilian authorities have taken the correct measures to show they are safe.’

Brazilian embassy commercial spokesman Eduardo Barbosa said: ‘They are harvested by forest people in the Amazon, for whom this ban will have a big impact.’

Sainsbury’s said: ‘This is an industry-wide issue and we are not stocking Brazil nuts in the shell but we are still selling Brazil nut kernels.’

Humans could live 5000 years say scientists

Blame it on boomers – people born between 1946 and 1965. The baby boom generation now makes up more than a quarter of the US population population -some 77.5 million people, with more than 160,000 in San Diego. One-third are over age 50.

Every seven seconds, another boomer joins that group. In just seven years, the first boomers will hit official retirement age. By 2030, boomers 65 and older will represent one in every five people.

For them, 65 will be the new 45. Or so they hope, and so many claim.

From self-described anti-aging institutes to miracle elixirs to how-to manuals for living a century or more, boomers (and just about everyone else) want to live longer than those in previous generations.

These days, the average American has a life expectancy of 76.9 years — a little more for females, a little less for males.

Most people, of course, want to live much longer than the average. But what are the odds of living to the century mark and beyond? And how much beyond is possible?

The good news is that most scientists think human life expectancies can be substantially stretched. The not-so-good news, some experts say, is that the estimated maximum human life span — about 125 years — seems fairly fixed and that most of us will never get close.

“Longevity is really a modern phenomenon,” said S. Jay Olshansky, a demographer and biologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “The vast majority of humans ever born died before the age of 10, usually from infectious diseases.

“We’ve done fabulous things to boost the survival rates of the young — improved sanitation, new medicines — but now it’s a whole different ballgame. It’s not so easy to add 70 years of life to somebody who’s already 70 years old.”

No doubt. But a number of scientists and doctors think it’s too early to start talking about a “finished” line. They assert, in principle, that there is no maximum human life span.

Aubrey de Grey, a biogerontologist at the University of Cambridge in England, says that under the right circumstances, humans born in the 22nd century (just 96 years away) could live up to 5,000 years.

De Grey, who advocates using technology to develop a “true cure for aging,” is indisputably at the optimistic extreme. But plenty of others see longer lives ahead.

“I think people will someday live substantially longer than today,” said Steven Austad, a biologist at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. “(Living) into your 100s will be fairly routine, up to 150 for the outlier (a longer-lived person who is the exception to the rule). I think this because we have been so successful at figuring out how to make animals live longer.

“The arguments (against appreciably longer life spans),” he added, “are based so far as I can tell on ignoring a huge pile of research done over the past 15 years and the mystical belief that longevity, unlike every other human trait we know of, is impossible to change.”

Wear and tear

In biological terms, aging is usually defined as the accumulation of random damage to the building blocks of life, most notably DNA. The damage starts in early childhood and accelerates after age 30 or 40.

Over time, the accrued, unfixed damage impairs bodily functions. Cells, tissues, organs and systems work less well.

The immune system of a typical 65-year-old, for example, is only one-tenth as effective as that of a teenager. With less protection comes greater vulnerability to disease.

“Aging, in our view, makes us ever more susceptible to such ills as heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and cancer,” Olshansky wrote, along with Leonard Hayflick, a gerontologist at the University of California San Francisco, and Bruce A. Carnes, a professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, in an online essay published this year by Scientific American magazine.

But conditions like heart disease are age-related, not the actual equivalent of aging, the scientists note. And aging is not the same as longevity.

Even if modern medicine could eradicate all the leading causes of death among the elderly, says Hayflick, an early pioneer in gerontology research, human life expectancy would increase no more than 15 years.

People would still age, he said. Other afflictions would rise up to exact their deadly toll. The maximum human life span would remain unchanged.

Age-old questions

If scientists want to boost that maximum life expectancy of about 125 years, most experts say, they’ve first got to solve the questions of how we age and why.

All organisms age, but the process, called senescence, is variable and, in some species such as the giant tortoise and rougheye rockfish, it’s virtually negligible.

The tortoise is known to live for 150 years or more; the rockfish more than two centuries. Both exhibit almost no signs of aging.

Variable senescence among species suggests to researchers that there are biological mechanisms, as yet undiscovered or understood, that might be altered, replaced or removed to effectively slow or even reverse aging in humans.

De Grey at the University of Cambridge says biotechnology is the answer.

He thinks current and foreseeable medical technologies, from drugs that repair or prevent cellular damage to organ regeneration and replacement, may soon be able to reverse the effects of aging. He predicts that researchers will actually do so in mice during this decade.

“Intervention to remove the accumulating damage . . . has the potential to postpone aging indefinitely,” he said.

A big key will be genes, which researchers say dictate and exert influence over roughly 30 percent of the aging process.

“As we begin to learn more about genetics, we see that there perhaps are certain genes that enable people to cope better with stress, react better to hormones and possibly regulate the rate of aging,” said Dr. Robert Butler, president of the International Longevity Center-USA, a New York City-based think tank.

Scientists are pushing hard to find such genes.

In 2001, Harvard University physicians and molecular biologists conducted tests on people who were all at least 90 years old and found they shared one or two genes on a specific chromosome. The exact function of these genes, however, has not been determined.

More recently, Olshansky and colleagues have launched a global project to identify so-called longevity genes by sampling DNA from exceptionally elderly people in places where very long life spans are common, such as Okinawa, Japan; the Vilcabamba valley in Ecuador; and the Hunza region of Pakistan.

Such efforts, though, won’t mean more birthdays for everyone anytime soon.

Most researchers are skeptical that there will ever be a one- stop genetic remedy. They note that aging involves lots of other factors, not to mention the considerable ethical and social issues attached to significantly modifying the human genome.

“Is the purpose of medicine and biotechnology, in principle, to let us live endless, painless lives of perfect bliss?,” the President’s Council on Bioethics asked in a report last year. “Or is their purpose rather to let us live out the humanly full span of life within the edifying limits and constraints of humanity’s grasp and power?”

The council expressed concern that a world full of centenarians and a diminished sense of mortality might result in problems no one can imagine or resolve.

Others suggest that such worries miss a more pertinent point.

Tom Perls, a geriatrician who runs the New England Centenarian Study, says most people are already genetically well-equipped to live reasonably healthy lives well into their 80s. The only requirement: They take good care of themselves.

Dr. Dilip V. Jeste, director of the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at UCSD, agrees.

“The obstacles over which we have control (of aging) are primarily environmental and behavioral,” Jeste said. “These include smoking, use of drugs of abuse as well as excessive alcohol, sedentary habits, poor nutrition, etc.

“The prevention of hypertension, diabetes and obesity may help increase life span significantly,” he said. “Resilience, optimism, adaptation to changing circumstances and optimal coping style are also important.”

Jeste said the focus of aging science should be less about extending life spans and more about making aging a “successful process associated not only with longevity, but also with a high level of activity of brain and mind.”

The record for the longest documented life is held by Jean Calment, who died in France in 1997. She was 122. The last years, however, were not kind. She was blind, deaf, incontinent and unable to care for herself.

Quantity wasn’t quality, and Calment most likely longed for the youth of her 90s.

Nine out of ten adults suffer from bad breath

ALMOST nine out of ten adults suffer with halitosis at some time in their life, according to new research. For one in four people, it’s a chronic condition. Although it can be tackled successfully, many try to cover up the odour rather than treat the underlying problem.

The A to Z of beating bad breath.

ARTIFICIAL SALIVA: Produced at a rate of one to two pints a day, saliva fights bacteria, one of the main causes of bad breath. Some people do not produce enough but artificial substitutes are available as solutions, sprays and gels. They contain compounds designed to increase lubrication, as well as calcium, phosphate and fluoride.

BAKING SODA: Modern research shows that this old-fashioned remedy really does work. Its success lies in its ability to change acidity levels in the mouth, making it a less friendly environment for bacteria. Traditionally, it was mixed with water to form a paste or sprinkled as a powder on to the toothbrush. Today, it is incorporated in some toothpastes.

CHEWING: The best way to stimulate saliva and combat bad breath. Research at the University of California shows that chewing a sugarless gum for 20 minutes will substantially reduce levels of bacteria. Eating breakfast is the most effective way of combating ‘morning breath’. Chewing mint, cloves or fennel seeds may also help.

DIET: Research suggests that a high-fat and meat diet may contribute to bad breath. One theory is that these foods are high in the protein that bacteria thrive on. Research also shows that coffee contains high levels of acids, which may cause the bacteria to reproduce more rapidly. So brush your teeth after eating or drinking milk products, fish and meat. Dieters are at risk of developing unpleasant breath because of infrequent eating.

EUCALYPTUS: This is rich in cineole, a potent antiseptic that kills the bacteria responsible for bad breath. It is available in tincture form but is also an ingredient in many mouthwashes. One report showed that bacterial counts plummet in as little as 30 seconds after using a commercial mouth rinse containing the volatile oils eucalyptol, from eucalyptus, and thymol, from thyme, which both work against bacteria.

FLOSSING: Cleaning between the teeth once a day removes plaque and bacteria from areas where a toothbrush can’t reach. Wind 12in of floss around a finger on each hand. Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Always follow the line of the tooth and move the floss up and down to avoid damaging the gum — don’t use a sawing motion.

GREEN TEA: Scientists have identified polyphenols in green tea as the compounds that can prevent the growth of microbes responsible for bad breath as well the bacteria’s production of odorous gases. They reduce by 30 per cent the activities of enzymes that are responsible for the hydrogen sulphide smell of bad breath. And rinsing the mouth with black tea can reduce plaque formation and the acids that cause tooth decay.

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE: This can more than halve the amount of one of the compounds linked to bad breath. A rinse with a hydrogen peroxide solution reduced the sulphur gas concentrations of morning breath for eight hours.

INTERDENTAL CLEANER: Cleaning between the teeth once a day with interdental cleaners (disposable mini brushes, picks or sticks) removes plaque from between the teeth where a normal toothbrush can’t reach.

JUICE (WHEATGRASS): A good source of chlorophyll, a natural antiseptic, it has been shown to be useful in tackling bad breath and other body odours. The most popular way of consuming wheatgrass is juicing, which is preferable to chewing the raw grass.

KYOLIC GARLIC: A recent survey found that garlic breath is the most disliked mouth smell in the UK. That used to be a problem for those who want the health benefits of garlic but don’t like its taste or breath smell. The 20-month ageing technique used in processing Kyolic garlic gets rid of the odourcausing compounds.

LASERS: A team of doctors in Israel found that a laser was able to cure 51 out of 53 patients suffering from severe halitosis caused by the tonsils becoming infected with gasproducing bacteria. The treat-ment vaporised the problem area without causing damage to surrounding tissue.

MOUTHWASHES: Rinses and washes date back to ancient times. They eliminate the bugs responsible for bad breath while preserving the normal protective bacteria. The best time to use a mouth rinse is just before you go to bed. Because bad breath often originates from the back of the tongue, it is best to gargle with the mouth rinse.

NEW BACTERIA: People who suffer from bad breath could lack good bacteria that will keep out bad-smelling micro-organisms. Scientists in Boston have created a strain of genetically modified good bacteria, leading them to suggest that mouths could be kept fresh with the use of probiotic rather than anti-bacterial mouthwashes.

OXIDISING LOZENGES: Researchers in Israel who compared the benefits of oxidising lozenges with breath mints and chewing gum found that the lozenges came out top. Tests after 24 hours showed that only the full- strength oxidising lozenge significantly reduced bad odour. Just how they work is not clear, but one clue is that bacteria thrive in an environment where there is little or no oxygen — the lozenges have an oxidising effect on the surfaces of the mouth.

PARSLEY: Chlorophyll, a natural compound found in parsley and green vegetables, has an antiseptic effect, and stops the growth of toxic bacteria and acid. So chewing leafy vegetables is an effective way of combating mouth odours.

QUEEN BEE FOOD: Royal jelly, which is fed only to the queen bee, has been found to have an anti-bacterial effect. Similar bee and honey products work in a similar way to combat bugs and infections. Products based on propolis — a sticky substance collected by bees which protects them infection — have been shown to protect against halitosis and some types of ulcers.

RHUBARB: This traditional laxative can also be used to treat bad breath. It is particularly effective when mouth odour is linked to stomach problems or constipation.

SULPHIDE MONITOR: This device is used to measure the amount of smelly compounds in the breath. An electro-chemical sensor generates a signal when it is exposed to sulphide and other gases, and measures the concentration of hydrogen sulphide gas. Less scientific methods for self-diagnosis include breathing on the back of the hand and blowing onto a moist ball of cotton wall or into a bag.

TONGUE SCRAPER: Almost nine out of ten cases of halitosis originate in the mouth, and half are caused by tongue residues. Scraping can get rid of debris and volatile sulphur compounds, or VSCs, and so stop bad breath. In an Italian trial with patients aged 20 to 50, one group used a scraper and a second used a soft toothbrush on the tongue. The scraper resulted in a 75 per cent reduction in VSCs, compared to 45 per cent for the toothbrush.

ULCER TREATMENT: Halitosis can be a clue to other health problems, including infection with H. pylori, a common bacteria that has been shown to be the main cause of stomach ulcers. Researchers who treated 148 patients to eradicate the infection found it also got rid of halitosis.

VITAMINS: An important part in healing mouth and gum disease and in preventing bleeding gums is played by vitamin C. It also gets rid of excess mucus and toxins that can cause bad breath. Vitamin A aids in the control of infection and in healing.

WATER: A dry mouth has six times as many sulphur compounds as a moist one. Drink adequate amounts and hold in the mouth for as long as possible, swishing vigorously.

XEROSTOMIA THERAPY: Dry mouth — which is technically called xerostomia — can be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or by breathing continuously through the mouth. Xerostomia therapy involves breathing through the nose, keeping the mouth moist and avoiding alcohol, which tends to dry the mouth.

YEAST INFECTION TREAT-MENT: Halitosis and white-coated tongues can be symptoms of candida albicans or yeast infection. Candida is present in the mouths of almost half of the population, but it is not a problem until there is a change in the oral chemistry that allows it to thrive at the expense of other micro-organisms. These changes can occur for a variety of reasons, including taking antibiotics. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment is usually with anti-fungal medicines.

ZINC: Clinical trials have found that mouth rinses and chewing gum containing zinc help beat bad breath by reducing the concentration of oral volatile sulphur compounds for three hours. It’s thought that zinc stops an enzyme from breaking down an amino acid that makes the sulphur.

Milk protein lowers blood pressure

New Orleans: Drinking milk can assist in lowering blood pressure, scientists at the Tulane University in New Orleans have discovered.

A trial on 140 patients with hypertension showed a significant drop in their blood pressure of between three and five per cent.

As a result the researchers are to carry out a larger trial to examine whether the protein in soy milk has a similar effect.

Just how proteins from milk work is not clear, although it is known that other foods, such as salt, potassium and alcohol, can have an effect on blood pressure.

Milk protein can be taken in supplement form, or as milk itself.

Hair loss cure discovered in shark cartilage

A pill which contains glucosamine, a natural supplement found in shark cartilage has been found to promote hair growth.

BUCKS Fizz star Cheryl Baker has successfully treated a problem that affects many women, but which very few speak about. The Eurovision Song Contest winner always suffered from having somewhat less-than-lush hair. But when what hair she had started coming out in clumps in her hands as she washed or brushed it, she decided she needed to take swift action.

At first Cheryl thought that over-the-counter products such as sprays, creams and mousses might work. But when her hair kept falling out, she turned to a supplement made from shark cartilage.

‘A friend suggested I needed to take a dietary supplement to prevent the hair loss,’ she says.

‘The pills, Nourkrin, were quite expensive — £50 a month — and when not much had happened after the first month, I wondered whether shelling out for another month’s supply was a wise investment.

‘But I was told that it might take two to three months before I got a result and so I paid another £50 and prayed I would see an improvement. By the end of the second month, my hair had stopped coming out and was starting to grow again. Over the next few months it continued to grow and there was no more hair loss.’

Hair loss for men is not as big an emotional problem as it is for women. Many men take it in their stride, but for women it can be a major issue, affecting their feeling of femininity.

And while few women actually go bald, many find that hormonal changes can cause them to suffer from hair thinning and loss.

Cheryl, 50, is not alone. Research shows that up to two-thirds of women experience hair loss at some stage of their lives.

WOMEN often experience it for the first time two or three months after giving birth. The massive production of oestrogen during pregnancy puts hair follicles into their ‘growth phase’.

After the birth, the hormonal balance is restored and the hair follicles go into their ‘loss phase’, causing hair to fall out.

Similar problems can occur during the menopause or through stress. The contraceptive pill can also cause problems.

Cheryl says she now has her best head of hair ever: ‘Bucks Fizz are about to do a tour, and I was desperate to look my best. Taking the supplements has helped. People have noticed that my hair looks better and the improvement has boosted my confidence.’

Cheryl took a supplement that contains a mixture of shark cartilage, the mineral silica and vitamin C.

The most important ingredient in the pill is shark cartilage, which contains glucosamine, a naturally occurring supplement which stimulates the growth of new tissue. Trials have shown that it stimulates dormant hair follicles.

A study published in the International Journal of Medical Research showed a 38 per cent increase in new hair growth in 95per cent of patients taking Nourkrin over a six-month period.

The pills’ other ingredients — Vitamin C and silica — found in green vegetables — are thought to help stimulate hair growth.

Professor Jan Wadstein, a hair expert at Sweden’s Lund University, says there have been numerous studies on shark cartilage for hair loss: ‘There is no doubt it has a significant effect on hair growth.

‘You need to take it for six months and then you get a good, positive effect. After this, you continue to take a lower, maintenance dose to prevent further hair loss.

‘The results aren’t 100 per cent; far from it. But I would say you get about a 50 per cent improvement when you take supplements with shark cartilage.

‘For a lot of patients, that is a difference they can see and feel when they run their hands through their hair.’

Cheryl lives in Sevenoaks, Kent, with her husband, Steve, a guitarist in Cliff Richard’s backing group. She first suffered hair loss shortly after the birth of her twins ten years ago when she was 40.

‘I knew it was hormonal and didn’t panic, even though my hair was coming out in my hands.

‘After a few weeks it stopped happening and my hair grew back,

but it was still pretty thin. Then, when I started going through the menopause two years ago, my hair started falling out again.

‘Finding the supplement has been a blessing. I’ve spent my life trying to make my hair look more luxuriant but now, at last, it feels and looks as if it has real body.

‘Although I’ve finished the treat-ment, I still take a regular dose to keep my hair well supplied with nutrients.’

SURVEYS in Britain and the U.S. suggest that up to 4.8 million women suffer some degree of hair loss, which can be reversed with a change in diet, according to Harley Street hair specialist Dr Hugh Rushton.

He maintains that some women’s hair loss problems are due to low iron levels because of a drop in meat consumption.

Almost 90 per cent of women eat less iron than recommended. But the most recent figures on the problem are six years old, so things are likely to have got worse since the BSE crisis.

Iron levels in young women become depleted due to losing blood during menstruation, but this is aggravated by a diet containing little or no red meat.

As well as iron, meat contains the amino acid Llysine, which helps the body absorb iron.

Dr Rushton says hair loss drives some women to despair. ‘It devastates their lives because they know their hair is getting thinner. They can become clinically depressed.

‘It’s so upsetting that many women are put on anti-depressants or tranquillisers because of hair loss. Their self-esteem is dramatically affected, as is their quality of life, and they don’t always know where to turn.’

However, Tony Chu, Consultant Dermatologist at Harm-mersmith Hospital is not convinced.

‘Female hair loss can be down to iron deficieny or problems with the thyroid gland, and it is unlikely that any ingredients in the shark cartilage would help that,’ he says.

BOB MONKHOUSE TOOK IT TO FIGHT CANCER

SHARK cartilage contains glucosamine, a naturally-occurring substance found in human tissue. Glucosamine has been shown to build up cartilage, reducing wear and tear and bringing pain relief, and is commonly used in supplements for treating joint pain and arthritis.

In one trial, British scientists discovered that shark cartilage actually boosted cartilage in the spine, causing people to grow taller. The use of shark cartilage to treat cancer has attracted considerable controversy. The scientific basis for its use is that sharks rarely get cancer,

and thousands of sufferers started taking shark cartilage capsules after a book, Sharks Don’t Get Cancer, was published in 1990. But in 2000 research showed they doget cancers, including in the cartilage.

The late Bob Monkhouse, who fought prostate cancer, turned to pills made from shark cartilage, but lost his battle against cancer in December last year. A series of reports in the New England Journal Of Medicine on the dangers of alternative remedies featured a nine-year-old girl with a brain tumour who died after she was treated with shark cartilage instead of chemotherapy. Although there has been no absolute proof, supporters of shark cartilage maintain it starves tumours of their blood supply, causing them to shrink. Shark cartilage also contains high levels of proteins, vitamins and minerals, and a type of proteoglycan, which is a natural joint lubricant. Taking supplements helps to boost cartilage, which acts as a cushion between joints in various parts of the body, stopping them rubbing together. Doctors have created an artificial skin, which is used in place of a skin graft, acting as scaffolding while new skin grows from the bottom up. The skin contains shark cartilage and collagen taken from cows.

Americans fight for life after Botox treatment

Los Angeles: Four people suspected of contracting botulism after receiving Botox injections were critically ill last night.

It is thought they caught the potentially fatal illness, which causes breathing difficulties and muscle weakness, from a tainted batch of the anti-wrinkle treatment at a clinic in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

At least two of the patients – a married couple in their 50s – are on life-support machines.

‘This is a severe adverse reaction, most likely due to a contaminated vial, ‘ said Dr Charles Schallop, a neurologist at Palm Beach Medical Centre where they are being treated.

The other victims – a doctor and his girlfriend – are in hospital in New Jersey.

Botox is a sanitised form of the food poisoning bacteria botulinum toxin. Cosmetic surgeons have harnessed its muscle-paralysing ability to smooth furrowed brows and make patients look younger.

Hospitals have been warned to look out for symptoms of botulism in Botox users.

Cellular Therapy

Cellular therapy – also known as live cell therapy, cellular suspensions, glandular therapy, fresh cell therapy, embryonic therapy, refers to certain treatments in which the processed tissue from animal embryos, foetuses or organis, is injected or taken orally.

The theory is that the material from the organs correspondents with the ailing or diseased organ. The animals cells work by regenerating the unhealthy organ.

The organs and glands used include thymus, liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen, heart, ovary, testis, brain, pituitary and thyroid. They can be given individually or in combination.

The Swiss physician Paul Niehans (1882-1971) is known as “the father of cell therapy”. He founded the famous Clinique La Prairie in Clarens-Montreaux in Switzerland.

There are other clinics, mostly in Europe, offering this therapy in various forms.
There are several variations of cell therapy: the actual organic matter used can be frozen, freeze-dried or suspended in a serum. It can also be taken orally or injected intramuscularly. The cells are usually taken from the embryos of sheep or lambs.

The US company Cell Life Forever, for example, offers oral live cell therapy for the brain, prostate, muscle, skin, testical, kidney, heart, liver, bone marrow and placenta, amongst others.

The company sources its product in France and says that it is checked by the French government’s Institute Alfred Fournier laboratory.

Cell Life Forever says: “Some people may feel or see changes immediately, while others may take a number of supplements and not see any changes. “

The company says that it is unique in providing live cells. In Germany for example, Opotherapy treatments use products altered by sterilisation.

The Baxamed Clinic (Basel, Switzerland) offers “biomodular cell therapy”, which it says can be used as a preventative measure against ageing and also in the the treatment of various diseases.

The fetal cells are sourced from bovine and sheep organs from controlled herds in Australia and New Zealand.

Diseases that can be treated by biomodular cell therapy include congestive heart disease, sexual impotence, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, chronic fatigue, many auto-immune diseases and Down Syndrome. The treatment is customized to each patients’ needs. The products are injected intramuscularly, usually without any negative reaction.

RNA Products

RNA products are made exclusively of biologically active Ribonucleic Acids from fetal organs. These are essential components ov every single cell in the body. They are responsible for carrying out the instructions embedded in the nucleus of the cell for the growth and maintenance of the cell. During the time of youth there is an abundant supply of RNA to ensure the cells health. After the age of 40, though the amount of RNA in each cell dwindles as time passes and chronic degenerative diseases based on a malfunctioning cell repair system start to occur. These products supply the cells with the missing RNA. They come in single organ preparations and in combination products. For a general revitalisation, the RN 13 is commonly used. RN 13, as the name says, contains the RNA of 13 different organ systems. The main strength of RNA though is the successfull treatment of many degenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s, MS, Post Polio Syndrome and others. The effect of RNA treatment comes on over an extended period of time. Depending on the site and severity of the disease, the effects are usually noticeable within 1 to 3 weeks, In severe cases, the treatment should be repeated every 1 to 2 years.

Thymus Therapy

The Thymus product we use contains 50 mg Thymus Extract with standardized polypeptides including Thymosin. It is used in the treatment of:
Impaired Immune Function
Old Age
Opportunistic Infections
Chronic Infections
Rheumatoid Diseases
Support of Cancer treatments
Prevention of Allergies

The most important system in the human body is the immune system. it is responsible for fighting off infective agents such as bacteria and viruses. More important though is its neuroendocrine ability. Research has shown that there is an important link between Thymus hormones and other hormones in the entire body. Thymus hormones induce other glands to produce their specific hormones. In addition, a healthy immune system is of the essence to prevent autoimmune diseases from developing. Thymosin is used not only in the treatment of disease, but also as a preventive measure. The usual course of treatment involves 10 intramuscular injections given over a period of 3 weeks.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

In anti-ageing hormone replacement therapy, a qualified doctor will take detailed blood/saliva/urine tests to determine current levels of hormones in the body. As we age levels of most hormones deteriorate and contribute to physical and mental signs of ageing including weight gain and memory loss.

These are just some of the hormones that might be supplemented as part of an anti-ageing programme:

Human Growth Hormone (Somatotrophin)

It is manufactured in the laboratory and until 1996 was only authorised by the US’s FDA in the treatment of children with HGH deficiencies which led to abnormal height.

HGH can still only be administered on prescription but it is approved for use in hormone-deficient adults. This hormone decreases with age and can improve cognitive function including memory, muscle mass, decrease in body fat, healthier heart, lungs, kidneys, increased bone density, elevation of mood, energy and libido.

There are also some unacceptable side effects such as a possible role in promoting the growth of cancer and its use is still experimental as not enough is known. There are a number of web sites selling “homeopathic” HGH but experts say only injectable HGH works because it by-passes the stomach where it would loose its properties.

When doctors administer HGH the therapeutic levels are monitored by the levels of another hormone called Insulin Growth Factor (IGF-1) as HGH can only be detected in the blood for onlya few minutes after it is administered. The amount of IGF-1 in the blood increases as we get older and also in cancer patients and there is a strong link between IGF-1 and cancer. The transdermal administration of HGH lowers this risk.

This therapy is available from anti-ageing doctors on this site. You are advised to seek a blood test prior to treatment to see whether you are deficient in this hormone in the first instance.

The Baxamed Medical Center has a “Youth Restoration Programme” in which a blood analysis determines the level of hormones such as HGH, Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone and DHEA, of which decline with age. At the clinic they replace the missing hormones in the correct dosage. The clinic also offers fetal cell therapy which is injected intramuscularly. The patient then continues the treatment at home.

DHEA – Dehydroepiandroserone

DHEA is the most prolific steroid hormone produced by the human body but it declines with age. aIt helps build muscle, loose fat, normalize cholesterol and even improves memory. DHEA levels decline quite rapidly with advanced age.

MELATONIN

Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland located near the bottom of the brain and regulates the body’s sleeping pattern. Again as we grow older, the pinal gland calcifies and the secretion of Melatonin declines, causing the sleeplessness so often suffered by the elderly.

Melatonin also helps with stress and helps the immune system repair itself. It is helpful for migraine and has been shown to slow down the growth of cancerous cells in certain types of cancer. Its role in anti-ageing is that melatonin is the regulator of other hormones released from the brain and diminised secretation may be responsible for ageing.

PREGNENOLONE

Pregnenolone like DHEA, Melatonin, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone and Human Growth Hormone is a hormone that declines with increasing age. Recent studies demonstrated that Pregnenolone has a remarkable capability to increase memory function at very low doses. It is used to treat memory impairment due to illness and old age. In the 1930 to 1940s it was successfully used to treat arthritis, but it was forgotten when the first anti inflammatory medications were pushed on the market.

TESTOSTERONE

What is the Andropause: women in their fifties enter menopause, caused by a rapid decline of sex hormones – particularly progesterone. Until recently it was only suspected that men go through a change like menopause. New evidence confirms this supspicion. The decline of the male sex hormone testosterone is much slower than in women making the symptoms develop more slowly and hardly noticeable.

Testosterone is responsible for libido and sperm production. But it is not only a sex hormone, it also increases protein synthesis in the cells, and keeps up aerobic metabolism thus reducing the risk of cancer as cancer cells use anaerobic metabolism. Aerobic metabolism is also important to regulate cholesterol, supply sufficient oxygen to vital organs like the heart and the pancreas thus helping to prevent heart disease and diabetes. At any age aerobic exercise can increase the production of testosterone. Testosterone has fibrinolytic properties, this means it helps to prevent blood clots that would lead to thrombosis. Testosterone has anabolic properties and is counteracted by cortisol and adrenalin. Constant stress increases cortisol and adrenalin and aging decreases testosterone secretion. This leads to a catabolic state, where muscle mass is lost.

Testosterone therapy should be done under the supervision of a specialized physician. Only natural testosterone should be used such as Testosterone cream or patches. Most other forms are synthetic and not identical to the bodys’ own testosterone.

Drs Anita and Sam Baxas offer recombinant human growth hormone therapy, live cell therapy, thymus and RNA injections, plaquex and chelation infusions to avoid bypass and amputation surgery, and other European antiaging therapies.

The Baxamed Medical Center has a “Youth Restoration Programme” in which a blood analysis determines the level of hormones such as HGH, Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone and DHEA, all of which decline with age. The clinic’s therapy replaces the missing hormones in the correct dosage. The clinic also offers fetal cell therapy injected intramuscularly. The patient then continues the treatment at home.

The philosophy of the Baxamed Medical Center:

“The goal of conventional medicine is to keep patients alive. Just “being alive” though doesn’t mean there is any quality to life. Frequently “being alive” means being incarcerated in an ageing body, dependent on the help of others for even the simplest activities. It means loss of strength and vigor, loss of mental capacity and loss of many body functions. It means loss of independence and dignity.

Alternative medicine and specifically the Youth Restoration Program not only keeps the patient alive, it makes the patient strong with full physical and mental capacity to live a rich and independent life. The patient doesn’t become a burden on society, he remains a contributing member of it.

It is our belief that ageing is a disease, primarily caused by the waning secretion of hormones and by the degradation of cells in every organ. Many scientific papers have been written about how the production of hormones, such as HGH, Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone and DHEA, decline massively with age. It is also well documented that the decline in hormones typically causes many changes in body function and structure for the ageing patient.

It is thus logical that if we replace the missing hormones and cellular building blocks to repair damaged cells of organs, we can come close to bringing back a normal, youthful structure and physiology.”

Baxamed’s Youth Restoration Program consists of a full laboratory and physical analysis of the status quo. Then all necessary hormones are replaced in the correct dosage to reach the levels of 25 to 30 year old healthy people. The organs are revitalized by 29 different fetal cell preparations that are injected intramuscularly. In addition, we recommend a hair mineral analysis to determine the nutritional status of the cells and the load of heavy metal toxins.

The treatment is initiated at the medical center and continued by the patient in the comfort of his home.

Location

Located near the banks of the Rhine river in Basel, Switzerland, the clinic is reputed to be the first in the world to implement the use of Human Growth Hormone. Baxamed Medical Center specialises in anti-ageing medicine applying various treatments such as cell-therapy, thymus shots, ozone treatments and chelation infusions. As the role of hormones in the ageing process became a matter of intensive study, hormone replacement therapy with DHEA, Melatonin, Testosterone, Estrogen has been added to the already successful treatments.

The first study on the youthful effected of HGH were published in 1990 by Dr. Rudmann and subsequently the doctors at Baxamed Medical Center studied the literature on this hormone intensively and started treating healthy older patients with this newly discovered hormone.

The results were and still are incredible. Patients report feeling energetic, loosing fat and gaining muscle strength. Some have improved hearing and disposed of their hearing aids. Others report less gray hair. HGH was able to dramatically push anti-ageing medicine into a new era of study and application. Most clinics using HGH now days apply the principle of blood result evaluation and HGH dosaging developed by the physicians at Baxamed. For more than 10 years these physicians were able to gather ample experience in the replacement of HGH and other hormones.

To start anti-ageing treatment, the patient travels to Basel, and stays in accommodation in one of the city’s hotels. At the clinic the patients’ personal health history and problems are discussed and a comprehensive blood test is performed to determine the hormone status and dosage requirements. Prior to the patients’ visit he or she will receive a kit to have a hair mineral analysis done. The results will determine if certain minerals should be taken and if there is a presence of heavy metals and should be removed. Not only the hormone replacement, but also the optimal combination of cell therapy preparations depends on a thorough examination of the patient. Once all the results are available, a personalized treatment plan is made including cell-therapy, thymus therapy and hormone replacement.

The cell combination depends on the age of the patient, the general condition and particular health considerations, and which organs require treatment to improve their function.

For patients with time constraints it is more efficient to bring all necessary laboratory results from their home town as required by Baxamed. In this case prior to the visit to the clinic lab results are taken and the questionnaire answered and faxed to Baxamed. Then the treatment can then be pre-planned and arranged before the patient visits the clinic. The discussion of the treatment and all instructions can be taken care of in one day. The patient then receives all materials, medications and instructions to take home. However, a resting phase of a few days after the cell therapy is suggested to give the body the time and freedom of stress to absorb and utilize the injected cells. We try to make this stay as “unclinical” as possible which is why we advise our patients to stay in hotels nearby.

To heighthen the success of the anti-ageing treatment, diet and exercise as well as nutritional supplementation are discussed.

Patients with vascular disease (heart attack, angina, peripheral clogging of the blood vessels) are successfully treated with Chelation and Plaquex Infusions. This treatment takes several weeks and the infusions are applied 3-4 times weekly. Chelation infusions remove heavy metals and free radicals and Plaquex infusions remove the fat from soft plaque. Both also have extensive anti-aging properties. Baxamed has just added new treatment rooms to its office offering a relaxing and comfortable surrounding during the 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours the infusions take.
Clilnic staff are fluent in German, English and French as well as speaking some Spanish and Italian.

Between the treatments there is plenty of free time to explore the city of Basel and its surroundings. Basel, situated on a sweeping curve of the Rhine, is not only the golden gateway to Switzerland but is also one of the oldest University cities in Europe. Today it is still world-famous for its highly developed medical and pharmaceutical technology and the watch and jewellry fair each spring. Basel lies where the three countries, Switzerland, France and Germany, meet – on the border of romantic Alsace and only a stone’s throw from the legendary wine country of South Baden- and this has contributed to its growth into an international metropolis.

There are a number of interesting excursions and walks in the surrounding countryside as well as cultural activities and art which Basel has to offer: the nearby hills with their ancient ruins and castles, the theaters and concert halls with their international programs, the museums and the galleries, with their ever-changing shows and exhibitions.

The International Biomedical Center (IBC) is an outpatient clinic with services available to anyone who is interested to discuss his/her medical problems, or who wants to get a second opinion. Also extensive general health assessments are available, for private purposes or for insurance companies or driver’s license.

Peter J Van Der Schaar, pictured, is the Medical Director

What type of conditions and diseases are treated at the center?

IBC investigates any medical ailment or complaint, even if no previous diagnosis could have been made, or the problem was considered untreatable. These conditions may include eczema in babies as well as severe cardiovascular disease in senior citizens, or ADHD as well as Burnout syndromes, Fibromyalgia, or other problems with muscles and joints.

What kind of treatments are available?

The International Biomedical Center tries to integrate regular as well as complimentary therapies as needed, to achieve the best results for the patients, with the least costs and best risks.

These are examples of the treatments:

Detoxification

IBC’s philosophy is that detoxification of the body is one of the most important conditions for further successful treatment, so, in many cases a test for toxic metals is included into the initial assessment studies. The removal of toxic metals is usually a relatively simple and rewarding procedure. The most often used metal chelators are DMSA. DMPS, DTPA and EDTA. IBC has a close cooperation with one of the most renowned labs for determination of toxic metals, MTM in Germany.

IBC also works with several specialized dentists for the replacement of toxic amalgam fillings in the teeth. IBC is recognized by the International Board of Clinical Metal Toxicology. (www.IBCMT.com). Detoxification will improve the outcome of other treatments, which may include:
Enhancement of Immune Status
Hormonal Balance
Magnesium EDTA chelation for atherosclerotic diseases
Antiaging
Anti-allergy

Back ailments

IBC is also interested in the adjustment of vertebral mis-alignment, especially of the whiplash injury. These misalignments may be responsible for various conditions, such as headache, cardiac arrhythmias, bowel problems, low back pain etc. But also nutritional, herbal and homeopathic treatments, laser light therapy, lymph drainage are in the repertoire of IBC.

Hair removal & Practitioners

Epilight Hair Removal

A non-invasive light therapy device specifically designed to eliminate undesired hair from all parts of the body.

Epilight uses pulsed light to remove hair and impair hair regrowth. First a cool gel and a hand held treatment unit are gently applied to the skin. Then in a flash, pulses of light safely penetrate the skin and kill the hair follicles. Hairs will fall out when the gel is removed and also over the next few weeks.

All areas of the body can be treated. It does not work on blond, grey or white hair.

The treatment can tingle and there may be some reddening of the skin which goes down in a few days. In rare cases there have been instances of blistering.
You should not use a sunbed for two months prior to treatments.

Acupuncture

ACUPUNCTURE is practised mostly on horses, dogs and cats, but other animals do benefit. It has been tried at some point on most species, including rabbits, cattle, pigs, parrots, birds of prey, guinea pigs and rats. Pets can undergo acupuncture for a wide range of conditions such as joint problems, pain and inflammation, muscle spasms, wound repair, lameness and nerve problems, and after accidents and surgery. It is also given to induce labour and to help animals giving birth. Incontinence can be eased and some inflammatory skin problems will also respond.

With horses, acupuncture may improve endurance and stamina. During treatment, very fine needles are used at specific points on the body, but for sensitive or worried pets a special laser, photonic or electrical stimulation can be used instead.
When the needle reaches a specific point there may be a sensation like a dull ache and some pets find this uncomfortable. The other options are gentler and less invasive. If your vet doesn’t practise acupuncture, he can refer you to a specialist.

Pets General Advice

Pets such as dogs and cats are like humans, living longer than ever before. But unlike humans they have fewer causes of sudden death as a result of disease such as heart attacks and strokes. The physical changes that occur, particularly for dogs, occur slowly as the years go by.

Again as in humans the life expectancy of your dog or cat is influenced by three primary factors: genetics, environment and nutrition. Although we cannot influence genetics we can ensure that our pets have a pleasant and happy environment in whch to live as well as optimum nutrition. This will ensure that your pet lives to its maximum lifespan.

Dogs in the wild do not usually reach old age because any incapacity would leave them to die as a result of lack of food. Our pets, on the other hand, may have too much food. There are all kinds of new medical treatments, offering protection of viruses and even new gadgets such as pacemakers.

Again there is a comparision with humans. To ecourage healthy ageing, petwoenrs need to feed their dog or cat carefully, get regularly vet check-ups and get plenty of exercise. Pets also need plenty of mental stimulation and affection. Thinner dogs live longer than obese dogs, so be careful to feed limited amounts of food and watch the treats. Rather than feed freechoice, feed smaller meals, more frequently.
