Are you a shopaholic? Scientists prove it’s an illness!

People who shop excessively show signs of addiction, according to researchers at the University of Bergen.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

The researchers, at the Faculty of Psychology, have developed a new and unique method to measure shopping addiction: the Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale (BSAS) – based on coreaddiction elements recognized as diagnostic criteria for other addictions, according to a report published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.

Lead author Cecilie Schou Andreassen, Doctor of Psychology and Clinical Psychologist Specialist describes shopaholism as being “overly concerned about shopping, driven by an uncontrollable shopping motivation, and to investing so much time and effort into shopping that it impairs other important life areas.”

The Bergen study confirms that excessive shoppers display similar symptoms to those in drug addiction, alcoholism and other substance addictions. People with problematic shopping behavior experience craving, withdrawal, loss of control and tolerance. The research also provides evidence that younger females are most likely to shop excessively.Shopping addiction typically starts in late adolescence and emerging adulthood, and it appears to decrease with age.

Five key traits of a shopaholic
Dr. Andreassen’s team tested the BSAS and reviewed the roles of extroversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness and openness to experience in shopping addiction.

Extroverts tend to use shopping to uphold social status and sustain social attractiveness, such as by buying a new outfit for every occasion. The current study finds that extroverts need more stimulation than non-extroverts, and that they indulge in specific types of products as a way to express their individuality, enhance personal attractiveness, or as a way to belong to a certain privileged group, such as by purchasing high-end luxury goods.

People suffering from neuroticism, anxiety, depression and self-consciousness may shop to reduce negative emotional feelings. The Bergen researchers suggest that people scoring high on neuroticism engage excessively in different behaviors in order to escape from dysphoric feelings.

Conscientious and agreeable people may be less prone
People with low conscientiousness scores display low ability to be structured and responsible, leading to impulse buying. The current study adds that conscientious people have better planning ability, high self-control and the ability to resist temptations.

Agreeableness may deter shopping and other addictions, as addictive behavior can lead to conflict. However, agreeable people, being more trusting, may be more prone to exploitative marketing techniques.
Openness to experience may be negatively related, in that shopping addicts are less adventurous, less curious and put less emphasis on abstract thinking than their counterparts.
Intellectually curious people may avoid excessive shopping by having a better perception of reality that deters them from such activities. Some consider shopping too conventional an activity, at odds with central features of the openness/intellect trait, such as imagination, curiosity and unconventional values.

Low self-esteem and anxiety are factors
The current study shows that low self-esteem is common among shopping addicts, for whom irrational beliefs, such as “buying a product will make life better” and “shopping this item will enhance my self-image,” may trigger excessive shopping behavior.

Depression and psychological distress, such as anxiety, have been linked to shopping addiction, as people seek to escape or cope with negative feelings. The current study confirmed this, but at the same time, excessive shopping may cause anxiety and depression because of the consequences.

The Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale (BSAS)
The researchers set out to review the causes of shopping disorder and create an assessment tool that would take into consideration new awareness of the factors.
To construct the survey, seven addiction criteria were established, and four questions constructed for each, making a total of 28 items.
These were incorporated into a self-report questionnaire with additional questions about demographics, compulsive buying habits, personality, self-esteem, and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
The questions were distributed through the online edition of five nationwide newspapers in Norway in March, April and May 2014 to 23,537 participants, male and female, and covering a range of education levels and employment statuses.

Scoring “agree” or “completely agree” on at least four of the following seven questions may suggest addiction:

The items are scored on the following scale: (0) Completely disagree, (1) Disagree, (2) Neither disagree nor agree, (3) Agree and (4) Completely agree:

. You think about shopping/buying things all the time
. You shop/buy things in order to change your mood
. You shop/buy so much that it negatively affects your daily obligations (e.g., school and work)
. You feel you have to shop/buy more and more to obtain the same satisfaction as before
. You have decided to shop/buy less but have not been able to do so
. You feel bad if you, for some reason, are prevented from shopping/buying things
. You shop/buy so much that it has impaired your well-being

The rejuvenating power of sleep revealed

Many previous studies suggest that a good night’s sleep can rejuvenate the mind and body.

sleepingwoman

Now in a new study by Judith Carroll, from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA; California, USA), and colleagues reveals how partial sleep deprivation affects DNA and aging.

The researchers studied 29 men and women, ages 61 to 86 years, living independently in the community setting. Subjects underwent an experimental partial sleep deprivation protocol for four nights, including adaptation, an uninterrupted night of sleep, partial sleep deprivation (restricted 3 a.m. – 7 a.m.) and another uninterrupted night of sleep (recovery).

The researchers obtained blood samples each morning to assess peripheral blood mononuclear cells (pMBCs).

Results show that one night of partial sleep deprivation activates gene (PBMCs) consistent with increasing accumulation of damage that initiates cell cycle arrest and increases susceptibility to senescence.

The study authors write that: “These findings causally linked sleep deprivation to the etiology of biological aging, and further supports the hypothesis that sleep deprivation may be associated with elevated disease risk because it promotes molecular processes involved in biological aging.”

Can Vinotherapy make you younger – after all wine is not just for drinking?

Featured

by Avril O’Connor

The vista is of grapevines which stretch as far as the eye can see. Only the buzzing sound of cicadas can be heard as the sun goes down amid the heat of the late afternoon. On the patio outside my room at AbadĆa Retuerta LeDomaine I catch the last rays of the dayā€™s sunshine and sip a champagne cocktail. I can see the bobbing heads of cyclists, fellow guests slowly making their way through the vines.

Built in the 12th-century, the abbey was a place of sanctuary and solitude for monks, but after years of restoration it is now a hotel with a Michelin star restaurant and El Santuario, a world-class spa in the heart of the Duero Valley wine region.

La Domaine

LaDomaine is an ancient abbey in the centre of Spain’s Duero Valley wine region

We are almost in the centre of Spain – in Don Quijote country – a two-hour drive from Madrid, and a few kilometres from Valladaloid, once the capital of Spain. The motorway journey passes by the ancient city of Segovia and we see its Gothic cathedral towering above the city, silhouetted against the sky.

This region, Castile and LeĆ³n is not so popular with tourists, particularly those, from the UK, but it has lots to offer including stunning countryside, uncrowded cities with palaces and of course the sensational wines.
ledomaine pool

refectorio1_1

Refectario restaurant – a classical setting for delicious local food

The ā€˜abbeyā€™ is set in 1,730 acres of farmland with 500 acres dedicated to the vine. The wines as you would expect are mainly red ā€“ merlot, tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and various blends of these varieties and exquisite ā€“ and we get to sample them with lunch and dinner.

Its early August and in this part of Spain the summers are hot and searing and winters freezing because of the altitude on a plateau surrounded by mountains. The vines have to be nurtured in Spring with huge windmills that chop through the chilly air to prevent frostbite killing the young shoots.

Outside

Jardin de Claustro

The spa is below ground ā€“ to avoid compromising the architectural integrity of a 900-year-old building – underneath what was the stables. There are eight new spacious rooms, which have direct spa access. Mine is one of these with an outside patio that looks across the vineyards. The hotel has a total of 30 rooms and suites.

The one star Michelin-starred Refectorio, was once the abbeyā€™s dining hall. It is a the stunning setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is under the direction of Pablo Montero the hotelā€™s Head Chef. In addition to Refectorio, guests may choose to dine at Vinoteca, which serves a selection of tapas and in fine weather outdoors in the JardĆn del Claustro.

Orchestra

A unique setting for classical music

A personalised treatment programme is created for all spa guests and is based on a ā€˜blind tastingā€™ ā€“ of oils to smell and wines to taste ā€“ and depending on palette and aroma preferences, designs appropriate spa experiences to target the guestsā€™ physical and spiritual needs at that specific moment in their wellness journey. There are seasonal teas and juices for those who donā€™t want to drink alcohol.

So after a look in the mirror ā€“ I could do with rejuvenation ā€“ and after an a la carte breakfast in the Refectorio with freshly squeezed orange juice I go down to the spa and seek the advice of my spa sommelier

The spa menu offers a full range of classical treatments and services, while the abbeyā€™s deep-rooted wine culture is embodied in a bespoke fusion-wine vinotherapy spa concept of personalised spa journeys based on local wine traditions.

My recommendations include Le Grand Cru, the ultimate oenotherapy experience combining a soothing footbath, body exfoliation with grape seeds and essential oils, vitamin drink, nurturing anti-aging body wrap and soothing pumices massage.

I try this and along with my other treatments ā€“ the Anti-Fatigue Back Remedy 60minutes of a combination of self heating mineral mud, oils and minerals are put onto my back and followed by a massage. This is followed by the Abadia Retuerta Signature Facial ā€“ a 90 minutes treat that hydrates and revitalises the skin leaving it radiant and fresh. The experience ā€“ the quality of the massage and the ambience in the spa is the best I have ever experienced. And I have visited lots of spas!

The spa has an array of guest facilities including four individual treatment rooms, a Spa Suite, outdoor rain showers, indoor heated pool, outdoor pool with a snack menu and separate ladies and menā€™s wellness areas each with a sauna, steam baths, experience showers, hydrotherapy pools, relaxation room and changing areas. There is a gym where you can get personal training sessions, advice on exercise regimes and classes in Pilates, yoga, meditation and Qi Gong.

Andres Araya, the hotelā€™s Managing Director, a Chilean highly experienced in running five star resort hotels across the world said: ā€œWe have juxtaposed an historic, 12th-century abbey hotel and winery with a 21st-century wellness centre to create an unprecedented guest experience in Spain. AbadĆa Retuerta LeDomaine is defined by its exquisite facilities, savvy hospitality, storied ambiance and pampered personalisation, wrapped in holistic healing at a transformational new spa.ā€

Setting the table for guestsā€™ spa experiences there is also nutritious, healthy and light Spa Cuisine ā€“ that is also tantalisingly delicious.

El Santuario is energy-efficient uses solar panels and groundwater pumps to generate energy for heating and cooling. Geothermal storage systems compensate for the seasonal fluctuations in energy demand. And a dedicated water-treatment plant allows water to be recycled and used for irrigation.

The guest programmes include:
– Spa Gourmet Getaway, combining rejuvenative treatments with healthy cuisine for two guests. Included are accommodations for three nights, breakfast daily, welcoming foot ritual, Le Grand Cru two-hour spa journey, two lunches at Vinoteca and two dinners at Refectorio, free mini bar, free internet, use of recreational and fitness facilities and upgrade and late check-out (subject to availability). From ā‚¬1,961 (GBP1,470*)

Included are accommodations for three nights, in-room detox breakfast daily, three spa cuisine lunches at Vinoteca and three dinners at Refectorio, full butler service, wellness consultation, one-hour personal training session, yoga or Pilates session daily, bicycle excursion through the vineyards, welcome foot ritual, one 60-minute Detox Wrap, one 60-minute Revitalising Massage, one 60-minute Cryo Jetlag Reviver, free mini bar, free internet, use of recreational and fitness facilities and upgrade and late check-out (subject to availability). Wheelchair bound man walks with Rex the Robot

A 37-year-old British man unable to walk because of a serious spinal cord injury has stood up and ‘walked’ with the aid of robotics.

IMG_8908

The man who is wheelchair-bound was mobilised by the robotic system, known as the REX in less than four minutes.

He also completed a prescribed set of exercises. He was taking part in a trial of a new robotic medical device called REX designed for wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments such as paralysis.

The trial, called RAPPER II is a multicentre International 100 patient study, approved by the NHS National Institute of Health Research, designed to measure the time taken for wheelchair users to:
ā€¢ mobilise in a REX
ā€¢ complete a set of prescribed exercises

IMG_9087 2

The clinical trial will also look at whether people with different levels of spinal injury, can be safely treated with REX.

What is REX?
REX is the worldā€™s first hands free robotic walking and exercising device for use by wheelchair users (spinal cord injury, MS, Stroke, Muscular Dystrophy), designed by two Scottish engineers.

Wheelchair users are at risk of developing numerous medical complications from extended periods of sitting. So by enabling them to spend more time standing, walking and exercising, REX may offer significant health benefits.

Where are the clinical trials of REX taking place
The UK will lead the trials and other countries will follow. The first trial site is the specialist neuro-rehabilitation centre called PhysioFunction, near Northampton. Rex Bionics, the company developing this technology expects to add further sites, in the UK as well as overseas.

Who can take part in the clinical trial?
The physiotherapists at PhysioFunction will be able to treat volunteers (who have a spinal injury), free of charge, from all over the UK and overseas, provided they meet the inclusion criteria for the trial.
Volunteers who would like to be considered for participation in the trial should contact the dedicated email address rex@physiofunction.co.uk or call UK 0800 043 0327

The principle Investigator for RAPPER II Trial is Dr Nick Birch, MBBS FRCS (Orth), Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon is the principle Investigator for the RAPPER II Trial.

Where will the results be published?
The results from the UK volunteers will be collated with the results from other European sites with the intention to present data from the first cohort of patients at a medical conference before the end of 2015

The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA)
The Spinal Injuries Association, the UK charity providing support and information for spinal cord injured community, is helping to raise awareness of the trial.

Searches for depression and anxiety soar reveals Google

Google

Online searches via Google on anxiety tripled while those relating to depression increased by half, compared with just five years ago.

People prefer to turn to the internet rather than their doctor for medical advice, it has been revealed in research by private medical provider BUPA.

Inquiries into stress soared, reaching an all-time high in March, while searches for information relating to back pain were three times higher in January compared with the same month five years ago.

People are also worried about dementia and diabetes – searches have doubled in the last five years

BUPA discovered via poll – not directly with information from Google – that Ā four in five people turn to the internet for advice.

Most (84 per cent) said they find they are confronted with conflicting information leaving them confused and sometimes even more anxious.

Dr Paula Franklin, medical director for Bupa UK, said: ‘It is hardly surprising that people are feeling confused and frustrated when looking for health advice online, given the amount of information out there.

“People want to know more about their health and well-being than ever before so it is essential that they know where to get trusted and clinically approved advice, and are aware of the risks of reading unqualified health information.
“There is a clear need for more help in navigating healthcare information online.”

Meanwhile, anxiety searches tripled and those relating to depression increased by half, the survey revealed.

People who stand more live longer – new campaign to get Britain on its feet!

How long do you sit? Carnegie University researchers Dr Michelle Mellis and Dr Zoe Rutherford, look ahead to the forthcoming ā€˜On your Feet Britainā€™ campaign and offer their expert advice on how to become more active in the workplace.

Have you ever calculated how many hours you spend sitting, both at work and at home? The outcome can be somewhat shocking, with the average desk-based worker now accumulating an average of 9 hours of sitting per day. The workplace has evolved to be so technologically efficient, which ultimately means as employees we are adopting sedentary behaviours. We just donā€™t need to get up and move around like we did before the digital era, plus we can almost convince ourselves that spending more time in front of our computers makes us more productive. The reality however is the opposite, and excessive sitting at work could have a negative impact on our job and our health.

Our own sitting time calculations have revealed some worrying information, ranging up to 14 hours sitting on a bad day for Michelle. This is despite achieving the recommended daily physical activity of 30 minutes which is really only scratching the surface. Our focus therefore needs to be on the other waking hours and seeing how can we sit for less? If you are interested, you can calculate your own sitting hours and the associated risk at www.getbritainstanding.org/

At a recent conference ā€“ the inaugural Active Working Summit ā€“ we were busy networking with fellow academics, researchers and industrial partners in an effort to promote the importance of ā€œactive workingā€. We were lucky enough to be given a height-adjustable desk each and it has provided us with a first-hand opportunity to support our vision to #SitLessStandMore.

In January 2015, the public health guidelines were updated and for the first time they now include a recommendation to reduce prolonged sitting. The guidance is to build up to two hours of standing per day, and then progress this to four hours per day. We canā€™t underestimate the power that light physical activity (standing and general movement around the office) could have on breaking up our sedentary lifestyles. It is important even for those that are achieving the physical activity recommendations of 150 minutes moderate intensity exercise per week as it does not appear to offset the risks associated with prolonged sitting. We will be covering more about this in a future blog post so watch this space.

On Wednesday 24 April 2015, a national campaign is hosting ā€œOn Your Feet Britainā€, a day dedicated to getting people out of their chairs and becoming more active in the workplace. This campaign is led by the British Heart Foundation and Get GB Standing and will hopefully become an annual event. General activity suggestions many of you will be familiar with include:

  • taking the stairs as often as possible and avoiding the lift
  • getting off the bus one stop early or parking the car further away from the office to increase walking time are all excellent ways to move more.
  • Take small-group walking meetings ā€“ this is a pleasant way to have discussions with your colleagues and get some activity such as a few laps of the Acre.
  • Do a standing meeting ā€“ these have been reported to be more productive so they will be over quicker! Remember our time is precious.
  • Walk to a photocopier/printer at the opposite end of the corridor or on the next floor.
  • Remove the kettle from your office and walk to the staff room instead.
  • Do stretching exercises at your desk to mobilise ā€“ these small movements count as light physical activity.
  • Drink water so you get up to get refills or to go to the loo!
  • Move the rubbish bin to the opposite side of the office so you have to get up
  • Walk over to colleagues rather than sending an email or phoning them.
  • Stand up and pace when on the phone.
  • Set a reminder on your computer or phone to stand and move around every 30 minutes ā€“ alternate between sitting and standing
  • Take active breaks ā€“ walk around the office or go outside for 5 minutes.
  • Leave your desk for lunch ā€“ many of us are culprits of working over lunch but itā€™s important to take a break to boost productivity in the afternoon.
  • Going out to get lunch or drinks for the team ā€“ this will always go down well!

Selfridges spotlights mature creators and artists

Selfridgesā€™ tradition of beginning the year with unexpected, thought-provoking concepts continues with the launch of Bright Old Things. However, in a twist on its annual Bright Young Things scheme, which usually focuses on the introduction of gifted young new talent, the store is spotlighting a group of exciting mature creators and artists.

Bright Old Things at Selfridges

Mature creators and artists who are currently spotlighted in Selfridges amazing window displays!

With the ages of the participating artists, designers, musicians and entrepreneurs ranging from late-forties to mid-eighties, Selfridges acknowledges that ā€˜oldā€™ is as subjective as it is irrelevant. Hand-picked talents, some who will be instantly recognisable, and some entirely new names, have been chosen to take part on the basis that they have undergone a ā€˜retirement renaissanceā€™, a complete career change or an inspiring step into the unknown. The compelling line-up includes an ex-chartered accountant who became an artist in his sixties, an architect-turned-topiarist, and a product designer who has become a YouTube sensation with his vlog ā€˜Earth News For Space.ā€™

Each participant will be given a dedicated Oxford Street window with which to give the million people who pass by them every week an intimate insight into their creative visions. Special events spotlighting their work will take place throughout the scheme, including a soon-to-be-announced special programme for London Collections: Men, whilst products from selected Bright Old Things will be sold in-store and online.

Linda Hewson, Selfridges Creative Director, comments:
ā€œOne of the things we pride ourselves on is telling great stories. How better to start the year than by celebrating fourteen of them? As a centenary-old department store which has been successfully reinventing itself over and over again, it made so much sense for us to shine a light on the wealth of talent and experience harnessed by bright older creatives. These people can definitely teach us all a thing or two about growing old whilst staying young at heart and relevantā€.

Offering deeper insight still into the lives and legacies of the Bright Old Things, Selfridges has invited Todd Selby to capture each of these fascinating subjects in their homes and creative spaces.

From retailer-turned-designer Nick Wooster, one of the worldā€™s most photographed men in his fifties, to Molly Parkin ā€“ one time Fashion Editor at The Sunday Times and now a talented painter at 82 ā€“ by way of Bruno Wizard, 64, ā€œthe most famous punk youā€™ve never heard ofā€ā€¦ Bright Old Things is a joyful reminder that itā€™s never too late to try something new.

Since 2011, Selfridgesā€™ annual Bright Young Things initiative has established itself as an exciting showcase which includes alumni such as fashion talents Simone Rocha and Astrid Andersen, set designers Rhea Thierstein and Anna Lomax, and ā€˜haute coiffureā€™ designer Charlie le Mindu.

The Jolie effect continues as tests for breast cancer gene soar

A new study has confirmed that tests for the cancer gene BRCA Ā have continued to soar following Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a double mastectomy after a similar test.

BRCA testing rates surged nearly 40% in the week of Angelina Jolie’s announcement that she carried the BRCA 1 gene mutation and had an elective double mastectomy, according to a new AARP Public Policy Institute study released today.

This is the first report quantifying an increase in BRCA testing rates among women holding health insurance with a large US Ā company.

AARP Angelina Jolie photo from Istock _GPhillips_

Prior to Ms. Jolie’s announcement, women with a cancer diagnosis had more BRCA tests than women who did not, the AARP study found. However, during the week of her public announcement, the increase in BRCA testing among women who did not have a cancer diagnosis was nearly twice that of women with a cancer diagnosis. BRCA testing helps identify treatment options for women with the gene mutations before or after they are diagnosed with breast and/or ovarian cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Testing increased by 40%
“Our study showed that the BRCA testing rate increased about 40% and stayed at an elevated level for the rest of the year after Angelina Jolie’s announcement,” said AARP Executive Vice President for Policy Debra Whitman, PhD.

On May 14, 2013, Angelina Jolie announced in The New York Times that she tested positive for the BRCA 1 gene mutation and underwent a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. Ms. Jolie’s story gained immediate and widespread international media attention.

About 5-10% of breast cancers are thought to be caused by hereditary genetic defects, according to the American Cancer Society. BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations are the most common cause of hereditary breast cancer. Women with either mutation have a high lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

“By revealing her personal story, Angelina Jolie did an incredible job of raising public awareness about the BRCA gene mutations and the increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer,” added Whitman. “We found that Baby Boomer women ages 50- to 64-years-old had the highest increase in testing rates for the BRCA gene.”

To better understand the so-called “Angelina Jolie effect”, AARP, in collaboration with Optum Labs, compared BRCA testing rates based on claims among commercially-insured women ages 35 and older in the US, before and after Ms. Jolie’s story was publicized in 2013.

Study Highlights

— BRCA testing rates increased nearly 40% per week, from an average of 350
tests per week to an average of 500 tests per week and remained elevated
for the rest of the year.
— Women ages 50-64 had the highest BRCA testing rate increase (44%),
followed by women ages 35-49 (40%).
— BRCA testing rates increased for women among all racial and ethnic
groups: 43% among white women; 43% among Hispanic women; 23% among black
women; and 16% among Asian women.

About the survey

“Star Power: Angelina Jolie’s Personal Story of BRCA1 Mutation on Testing Rates Among Commercially-Insured Women” Methodology

AARP’s Public Policy Institute examined the number and rates of BRCA tests among women covered by a large, national U.S. health insurance carrier before and after Angelina Jolie’s May 2013 announcement (January-December 2013). Using data from the Optum Labs database of retrospective administrative claims data, the report also analyzed the age, race/ethnicity, and cancer diagnosis status of women ages 35 and older who received the tests.

Insurer scraps upper age limit on single trip policies for Europe

Over 50s insurance specialist Staysure has announced the removal of its upper age limit restrictions on its European single trip travel insurance policies.

Staysure couple image

Recognising the challenges older travellers face when searching for affordable travel insurance, Staysure will now expand its cover options to include customers aged 85 and over when travelling to Europe, enabling even more holidaymakers to fulfil their travel plans regardless of their age. While an upper age limit will still remain on some long haul destinations, the company has removed the restriction to allow its older customers to continue visiting their most popular holiday destinations, such as Spain, Turkey, Greece and Cyprus.

Staysure Head of Product Alison Longdon said: ā€œWe pride ourselves on being able to react to our customersā€™ needs and go the extra mile in creating products and services that suit their lifestyle. Getting affordable travel insurance in your 80s and 90s can be very difficult and expensive, whether due to age or existing medical conditions, so this change in our service offering for our most popular destinations is yet another step towards making our customersā€™ travel dreams come true and opening doors that were previously closed to them.ā€

Staysure CEO Ryan Howsam said: Since the launch of our Sure You Can! campaign, our customers continually tell us of the amazing things they do and what they get up to on their holidays and weā€™ve genuinely been impressed by the stories they share with us. It just goes to show that our customers really do want to live life to the full and fulfil their travel aspirations and our cover can enable them to achieve it.

SYC still 1

Staysure’s single trip travel insurance is ideal for holidaymakers looking for a great value, straightforward policy to cover one trip. Comprehensive single trip travel insurance includes cover for medical emergency and repatriation, up to Ā£10m; cancellation, curtailment and trip interruption, up to Ā£5,000; baggage loss, up to Ā£2,000; personal liability, up to Ā£2m and legal protection to cover up to Ā£25,000.

More information can be found at Stayure.co.uk. Terms and conditions apply to the age limit for long haul destinations. There is no upper age limit for single trip policies unless you are travelling to the United States of America, Canada, the Islands of the Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, Thailand, China or Hong Kong, where you must be 85 or under at the time of purchasing your policy.
Changes will be taking effect from February 2015.

This week Jon goes green!

It seems we need to go green!!

The debate over the use and benefits green tea has been lengthy.
greentea
There has always been a view that drinking green tea helps with weight loss.

It came up again a couple of weeks ago as my personal trainer was putting me through my paces as she drank a sizable mug of green tea.

While my PT is training for a bodybuilding show in a few months it seems green tea can help with fat burning I was told.

However there are those that say it is the caffeine in the tea that does the trick not the green tea itself.

Well now we have the answer its seems as academics at Anglia Ruskin University undertook a study with a group of men to see if decaffeinated green tea could do the trick.

They took a group of 14 men with an average age of 21 years old as the test subjects.

Seven of the volunteers, took the green tea capsule, containing 571mg of decaffeinated green tea extract, while the other took a placebo.

It seems the findings showed not only did those who took the green tea extract reduced their body fat by 1.63 per cent, compared with those in the placebo group, but their performance was also enhanced. Interestingly the level of fat oxidation rates, important in weight loss also increased by 25 per cent

All 14 of the test subjects were asked to cycle for one hour three times a week and those on the green tea saw their performance increase.
Those on the tea saw a 10.9 per cent the 28 days of the study which saw the distanced covered per session go from an average of 20.2km to 22.4km.

Thatā€™s the good news but the capsules themselves contained a dosage which would mean that those wanting to get the green tea boost would need to consume up to seven cups per day.

The university hopes that there will now be a wider study undertaken in order to provide more tangible proof of the benefits but it is a big step forward for those who believe in the benefits of green tea with or without the caffeine.

Popularity of cosmetic surgery nose dives in UK

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) recently revealed that the popularity of cosmetic surgery in the UK took a nose dive in 2014. The reported number of procedures performed during the year was down by 9% from 50,122 in 2013 to 45,406 with the greatest decline in breast implants and nose jobs.

nose

Following the 16.5% rise in the number of procedures in 2013, which BAAPS said was “the most impressive rise in demand since the start of the recession in 2008ā€, clinical negligence law firm Penningtons Manches believe that one reason for this unexpected reversal of the upward trend could be the intense scrutiny that the industry has been under during the last 12 months and the calls for tighter regulations.

BREAST IMPLANT FIGURES DEFLATED

While breast augmentation remained the most popular procedure in 2014 with 8,619 procedures being performed, this was 23% down on the 2013 figure of 11,135. This could be partly due to the PIP implant scandal which resulted in a large number of women having their implants replaced. The 2013 figures may, therefore, have been artificially inflated.

Nose jobs also fell out of favour with only 3,690 procedures in 2014, down 24% from 2013. Tummy tucks were also down 20% with just 2,713 procedures in 2014. The ā€œtweaked, not tuckedā€ look appears to have become the new aesthetic ideal with an increasing demand for more subtle and understated procedures.

For the second year running, the next most popular procedure for women was blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) with 7,752 procedures, a small 1% droop in the 2013 figures. However, eyelid surgery was the most popular operation for men in 2014 overtaking rhinoplasty (nose job). The number of brow lifts also fell by 7%.

ON THE UP

There was a 1% increase in the number of face and neck lifts to 6,402 while breast reduction surgeries were also up 1% to 5,528. The biggest increase was for body contouring procedures ā€“ particularly liposuction ā€“ which rose by 7% in 2014 to 4,627. Although the rise was comparatively insignificant compared with the 43% increase in 2013, liposuction continues to be a popular procedure. This is probably because it has a proven track record, can be done as an outpatient procedure, and delivers immediate results.

TOP 10 PROCEDURES IN 2014

  • Breast augmentation – down 23% to 8,619
  • Eyelid surgery – down 1% to 7,752
  • Face and neck lifts – up 1% to 6,402
  • Breast reduction – up 1% to 5,528
  • Liposuction – up 7% to 4,627
  • Nose jobs – down 24% to 3,690
  • Fat transfer operations – down 4% to 3,155
  • Tummy tucks – down 20% to 2,713
  • Brow lifts – down 7% to 1,978
  • Ear corrections – down 20% to 942

GLOBAL TRENDS

It is anticipated that more than 25 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed worldwide in 2014. In 2013, the United States topped the international chart with almost four million people going under the knife or needle, followed by Brazil with more than two million procedures. The country trends are expected to remain similar this year but countries like South Korea and Dubai should move up the ranks. At the end of last year, the Dubai Health Authority set a target to attract 500,000 medical tourists a year by 2020.

The United States is still the most popular country for body contouring procedures and Italy continues to be the main location for anti-ageing cosmetic procedures such as Botox injections and injectable fillers. The most common cosmetic surgeries done in Brazil are breast implants and liposuction while Taiwan is the country where cosmetic surgery is mainly done on the face.

Countries offering the cheapest price for procedures in 2014 included Thailand and the Dominican Republic ā€“ but even these cannot match India which offered the lowest price due to the countryā€™s cheap economy.

THE EXPERT VIEW

Looking at the 2014 UK figures overall, the number of female cosmetic surgery patients decreased by 9% and the males by 15% despite the boom over the past decade in male surgery. While 2014 saw a reduction in the popularity of cosmetic surgery in the UK, the global numbers of cosmetic surgeries are expected to continue their upward trajectory. This begs the question – are more Britons going abroad for treatment?

Experts attribute the new trends in the UK to an increasingly educated public who have a greater awareness of the associated risks and dangers and realise that surgery is rarely a quick fix. Whatever the reason, the age of the ā€˜less-is-moreā€™ look appears to have arrived and the Penningtons Manches team welcomes the new trends which suggest that people are adopting a more cautious, sensible and rational approach to cosmetic surgery.
