Polyenlphosphatidyl Choline

A moisturiser and a supplement which is used to improve memory and protect the liver.

Kojic Acid

A natural skin-lightening agent found in a Japanese mushroom. It works by blocking the formation of pigment. It is used for toning the skin, lightening age spots, freckles and general pigmentation problems on the face and body.

Idebenone

A synthetic antioxident that resembles co-enzyme Q-10 but has smaller molecules, allowing to be more easily absorbed by the skin. Its manufacturers claim it is more powerful than any known antioxident.

DMAE

DMAE

DMAE, or dimethylaminoethanol (chemical name deanol), is a compound found in high levels in oily fish such as anchovies, sardines and salmon. It is also produced in small amounts by the human brain. It is sold as a food supplement to boost brain function and is thought to be helpful in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Doctors are also looking at its role in treating poor memory and Alzheimer’s Disease, as well as some movement disorders.

The supplement was originally researched as a treatment for ADHD and early studies in the 1970s revealed that it was helpful for children with learning disabilities and behavior problems. This substance appears to increase production of chemicals in the brain essential for short-term memory, concentration, and learning capacity. It is also classed as an “cholinergic” because it is thought to increase levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, one of the chemicals in the brain that enhances mental powers. A decrease in the brain cells that produce acetylcholine is thought to be partly responsible for Alezheimer’s disease. “Cholinergic” drugs, such as tacrine (Cognex), donepezil (Aricept), rivasatigmine (Exelon), and galantamine (Reminyl) are used to treat the dementia of Alzheimer’s disease.

Although there are no conclusive studies it is possible that DMAE has memory-boosting effects. Many nutritionally oriented physicians prescribe DMAE along with another memory enhancer, the dietary supplement phosphatidylcholine.

DMAE supplements won’t work for everybody and are not intended as a cure. But they are safe and may be helpful. They should be taken with meals.

There are no known drug or nutrient interactions associated with DMAE but more needs to be learned this supplement. You should consult a doctor, particularly if you have any illnesses such as epilepsy.

International anti-ageing skin doctor Nicholas Perricone describes DMAE as “the magic bullet” for skin. He prescribes supplements and a diet high in wild salmon – his research documents changes in the skin in only three days. He believes that DMAE is a building-block of the neuro-transmitter acetylcholine which declines with age and causes a deterioration in musle-tone as well as brain function. This diet also has a beneficial effect on weight.

Recommended books by Perricone: The Perricone Prescription and The Wrinkle Cure

Beta Glucan

Beta Glucan is a powerful immune stimulator which is also effective in the diet in preventing coronary heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol levels. It is found in mushrooms, barley, oats and yeast.

About cryonics

Cryonics is the process in which those who have died are preserved by keeping them at a very low temperature until a means is developed to reverse the cryonics process and a cure for their illness or death is found.

So far cryonics is only a theory. No adult human has ever been revived as a result of a cryonics procedure. Although human embryos can be successfully cryopreserved and revived.

The cryonics procedure is begun when the heart stops beating – cardiac arrest (legal death). Blood circulation and oxygenation are restored in the cryogenics patient, to prevent deterioration, and the cryonics preservation procedures begin.

It costs between $80 and $130,000 depending on whether you request whole body to neuropreservation. Many people pay for it with life insurance.

The majority of cryonics organisation are situated in the US. Michigan-based Alcor, for example, has 650 future patients signed-up and 59 cryopatients. Future patients have wristbands and a card giving detailed instructions on what should happen on their death ie that no post mortem is carried out.

Cryonics Europe, based in the UK, has a team of volunteers trained to carry out the first stages of the preservation process. This includes putting the body in a portable bath filled with dry ice and attaching it to a machine designed to maintain circulation – this stops the further deterioration of cells. The blood is then drained off and replaced with a glycerol which works a bit like anti-freeze. Then the corpse is wrapped in polythene, submerged in alcohol, placed with ice and insulated in a fibre-glass box before being airlifted to Alcor in Michigan. Once in Michigan is it immersed in liquid nitrogen which sends its temperature plunging to -196C.

More detailed information on the procedure can be obtained from the Alcor web site and the contacts in this section.

Britons prepared to give up sex for longevity, says new survey

LONDON: A large number of Britons would be prepared to give up sex if it meant they would live to be 100, according to a survey on Friday.

The Mori research found that 40 percent would pass on the passion for longevity, although far more women (48 percent) were willing to make the sacrifice than men (31 percent).

However nearly all (94 percent) would not give up their friends or family in order to reach their century while a half thought scientists should keep trying to prolong people’s lifespans.

Private health care provider BUPA commissioned the survey as part of a debate on the implications of an ageing population.

“Britain is facing an ageing time bomb with major challenges presented by retirement, the desire to live longer and the increasing burden of caring for older people,” said Andrew Vallance-Owen, BUPA’s medical director.

Smoking lowers IQ and increases risk of dementia, experts warn.

SMOKING can lower your IQ and increases the risk of dementia later in life, experts warned yesterday.

Long-term smokers suffer significant damage to their memory and their ability to think quickly and solve problems.

Researchers warn that this may lead to difficulties in simple everyday tasks such as counting change – and may hasten the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Experts from Aberdeen and Edinburgh universities say the study offers the first conclusive evidence that cigarettes are bad for your intelligence as well as your physical health.

They believe that toxic chemicals in smoke get into the bloodstream and harm the blood vessels that provide the brain with vital oxygen supplies.

‘Our findings are significant because they show for the first time the long-term effect of smoking on cognitive ability,’ said Dr John Starr, of Edinburgh University. ‘The impact of smoking on the IQ of the people involved may appear small, but it will impair their quality of life.

‘They will experience niggly problems with any task that requires some sort of mental agility – whether that’s organising their daily life, remembering what to buy at the shops, doing crossword puzzles or playing bridge.’

In the study, detailed in New Scientist magazine today, researchers looked at 465 individuals, all of whom were born in 1936 and had taken part in the same IQ survey at the age of 11.

The team asked these people, around half of whom were former or current smokers, to take a series of five tests designed to measure their mental functioning and IQ between 2000 and

2002 when they were aged 64 on average.

After taking into account other factors which may influence their intelligence, such as education and alcohol consumption, the results showed that smokers tended to fare worse than non-smokers.

Professor Lawrence Whalley, of Aberdeen University, said that the smokers – who had been smoking for around 40 years on average – had experienced IQ reductions of around 2 per cent as a result of their habit.

Further analysis showed that when the effect of smoking on lung function was taken into account, the negative effect on IQ was around 4 per cent.

Scientists have previously shown that damaged lung function is associated with impaired mental ability, possibly because the brain is being fed less oxygen.

Professor Whalley said former smokers – most of whom had smoked for around ten years early in adulthood – also had slightly lower scores than nonsmokers.

He said the findings contradict the belief of some smokers that a nicotine rush can actually help boost their brain power.

He added: ‘Smokers are likely to be functioning at 2 per cent lower than if they had not smoked.

‘This becomes critical if you think of the decline you see in dementia – if you are starting from a lower point then it may come on earlier.’

Mena House Oberoi lies in the shadow of one of the wonders of the world, the Great Pyramids at Giza. Surrounded by 40 acres of scented gardens, this historic palace hotel is only 700 meters from the towering Pyramid of Cheops.
