New Product – Magic Minerals the perfect coverup for blemishes

Very few of us have perfect skin.  We all suffer from outbreaks and redness on occasions. And we would have to buy several products for each problem.

So the arrival of an all-in-one solution comes in the form of Magic Minerals – a new ‘self-correcting” complexion perfector mineral powder which can help achieve near perfect skin.

We know that getting a flawless complexion isn’t always cheap or easy, especially if you’re battling with blemishes, age spots, fine lines and an uneven skin tone.

MagicMinerals_base

But if you are looking for a product that really does make a difference this is it. It’s made with a revolutionary cover-up technology, developed to automatically adjust to match every skin tone without the need for blending.

The self-correcting minerals ‘float’ on the skin, airbrushing imperfections such as blemishes, fine lines, age spots and an uneven skin tone leaving the wearer with a flawless, luminous, youthful complexion.

The built-in colour correctors hide a range of nasty skin perfections instantly:

  • Pink – Brightens and gives a healthy glow!
  • Mint – Reduced redness and covers breakouts
  • Yellow – Conceals dark circles and uneven skin tone
  • Lavender – Corrects sallow complexions

Combined together these colour pigments work with the mineral powder to reveal a brighter, fresher and more radiant complexion.

MagicMinerals_pack
And since its made of minerals it doesn’t clog your pores; can be used by any skin type, will last for 12 hours, is fragrance free, Hypoallergenic and contains C and E Vitamins.

As the minerals ‘float’ on the skin’s surface it also has the added benefit of providing a natural protection from the ultra-violet rays of the sun

MagicMinerals_beforeafter2
Magic Minerals costs £9.99 and comes with a 30 day money back guarantee and is available from www.highstreettv.com from April 2014.

This product not only delivers what it says, but it’s great value and lasts for ages.

Our tester gave this product 8/10

Up to 70% off anti-ageing mineral make-up from bareMinerals

We absolutely love mineral make-up! The reason is that it doesn’t fill the wrinkles and creases and draw attention to the features you want to hide. It moisturises and camouflage and also puts your face in the best possible light with reflecting minerals.

It’s usually fairly expensive but lasts a long time – but one of our favourite brands has got a special offer which runs until 5 October.

Older adults should eat diary and exercise to decrease risk of bone and muscle loss

Combining four nutrients found in diary products with regular exercise can help ward off muscle wasting and bone disease, according to researchers in Switzerland, France and North America.

Calcium, inorganic phosphate, vitamin D and protein interact together with physical activity to maintain healthy muscles and bones, say the experts in an article published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition

bones

“While bone health is often associated with calcium alone, Calcium’s interactions with inorganic phosphate, vitamin D, and protein are important components of beneficial dairy consumption,” says the article.

“Combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence of hip and other non-vertebral fractures among older populations, with some studies suggesting that vitamin D actually leads to lower rates of falling in subjects. Dietary protein, while often associated solely with muscle recovery, also promotes bone formation by stimulating both Ca and Pi intestinal absorption and the production of a bone growth factor. And while vitamin D deficiency is associated with muscle weakness, vitamin D and protein supplementation are required together to improve strength.

“Combining the four above-mentioned nutrients with physical activity decreases the likelihood of bone and muscle degeneration-related injury in older adults. Dairy products are a convenient way to work them into a diet, as they contain Ca, Pi, and protein at levels comparable to recommended intakes, and are fortified with vitamin D.”

In the spa footsteps of the Grand Tourists in Tuscany

The modern spa experience, accompanied by the sounds of the rain forest and the smell of burning candles, can leave you feeling soporific and drained. But spas were not always so prescriptive.

pool.jpgIn Italy, for example, natural thermal waters deep underground and containing therapeutic minerals, spawned a spa culture from Roman times.

But it was during the Belle Epoque and the Grand Tour, in the early 19th century that wealthy foreigners took to “taking the waters” abroad.

Tuscany, in particular became a hotspot for these pleasure seekers.  It was not just the health benefits and the natural beauty of the area that attracted them but also because they could enjoy roulette and other forms of gambling outlawed by the state.

The poets Byron, Browning, Shelley, the composer Puccini rubbed shoulders with European Royalty, Russian princes and the Napoleon family. As one local reporter described the social scene at the time in one of the most popular,  Bagni de Lucca: “one is knee-deep in Royal Highnesses”.

Today you can still visit these historic “termes” but be warned there are no faux Buddah’s and no candles.  Be prepared for a more rustic and invigorating spa experience.

In Bagni di Lucca, about an hour from Lucca, the ancient thermal waters, rise in geothermal caves known as Grotta and  it was here that the spa culture was centered. The Grotta Paoline, names after one patron – Napoleon’s sister, is now part of the spa and wellness centre at the four star Antico AlbergoTerme. The hotel overlooks a picturesque valley with forests of pinewood and chestnut, bramble bush and beech trees. grottaP.jpg

Because of their historical and geographical nature the Grotta have been left as much as possible in their rustic state – the only comforts are ancient marble benches and modern low lighting. The waters contain many beneficial minerals (sulphur, carbon, calcium), particularly for respiratory and skin conditions.  You will likely see children and the elderly taking the vapours in a special room as these Terme are part of the state health system.  including and rain water at 3kms of depth and 54 degrees.

After an interview with a qualified doctor, Iana Togneri, we go the Grotta in our bathing suits and sit on the marble benches to sweat out our toxins. These vapours are very strong and rise into the cave at about 54◦c and we are advised that it’s not beneficial to stay too long. After about 15 minutes we are wrapped in a soothing hot towel and left to relax on bed.  The hyperthermia induced by the steam bath is balanced by the cold spa water shower in the same room.  The difference in the two water temperatures stimulates circulation throughout the body, helping to eliminate toxins.  This steam is a natural stress reliever as the heat encourages muscles to relax and tension slips away. So when you lay down to rest in a warm towel you may find that you do fall into a restful slumber. The steam bath costs €20 ($25, £16) and you can combine it with other treatments such as a Hammam deep cleanse

The spa wellness centre has a large range of mud baths, massages and other treatments using  thermal water. There is an anti-stress massage which lasts 30 or 60 mins (€34, $43, £27/€64, $82, £52)) anti-cellulite, aromatheraphy, salt, olive oil, stone, oriental and lymphatic drainage.  And a great facial massage with volcanic mud – €28 euro and scrubs which use the local chestnuts and olive oil.

On our way back through the wellness centre we pass through a very beautiful and elegant room which was once the site of the oldest casino in Europe and  invented the roulette wheel to relieve clients of their money.

ceilingoldspa.JPG The casino at nearby Ponte a Serraglio first opened in 1839 has recently reopened as an electronic casino and we visited one evening.  A sort of Las Vegas interior meets real palazzo is not what we expected. The Casino Reale was built by Carlo Ludovico di Borbone and still contains some of the original decorations but it is now filled with electronic casino machines and the tourist office.

electronicasino.JPGThe hotel rooms have recently been refurbished and are clean and comfortable with great views of the valley and some have huge balconies with loungers. The bathroom does not have toiletries such as shower gel so luckily we had some of our own. The restaurant is more family than romantic. But there is a great pool and the staff are friendly and helpful. A great place, off the beaten track, great for relaxing and walking.

The Antico Albergo Terme offers a number of wellness packages which don’t include the room price and meals: Weekend – two days of body and facial treatments (€215, $290, £190) or Wellbeing and Ambience Package 6 days of treatments €418, $564, £368. Check the prices when you book as currency exchange rates and seasonal prices may var.

Termi Bagni de Lucca also has its own line of wellness products including cleansers, toners and masks made with chestnut flour.

Don’t miss

Lucca – Hire a cycle and ride round the cobbled streets and piazzas which are pedestrianized or walk the 16th century walls.  Giacomo Puccini was born here in 1858 and there is a statue in one of the main squares.

Puccini.JPGThe Ponte Maddalena, at Borgo a Mozzano, which is also known as the Ponte del Diavolo built in the 12th century

The Ponte delle Catene  – a chain suspension bridge built in 1840 in Fornoli and recently restored. Now used only as a footbridge connecting Fornoli and Chifenti on the other side of the river Lima.

The medieval walled town of Barga – a mountain town where you can see the scenary for miles around.  It has an interesting 13th century cathedral, high on a terrace.

The delicatessen, Bellandi, via Jacopo da Chiviszzano, 4 in the village of Ghivizzano in the area of Garfagnana. www.selezionebellandi.com – you will find delicious sausages, local prosciutto, black sausages with chestnuts, friendly service and perhaps a glass of wine.

Essential minerals may cut heart attack risk

image

A diet rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium may cut the risk of developing coronary heart diseases and stroke, suggests a new study.

The findings, published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, suggest that an increased consumption of these minerals through fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products might reduce high blood pressure and decrease blood pressure in people with hypertension, which is one of the main causes of cardiovascular disease.

According to the paper, Americans consume double the sodium and about half the potassium that is recommended by current guidelines. If they are able to increase their potassium intake, the number of adults with blood pressure levels higher than 140/90 mm Hg might decrease by more than 10 per cent and increase life expectancy.

Some studies have also shown that diets high in magnesium at least 500 to 1,000 mg/d and calcium more than 800 mg/d may lead to both a decrease in blood pressure and risk of developing hypertension. Data regarding these minerals, however, are not definitive.

“If we were to achieve the correct potassium/sodium ratio through dietary means, there would be less hypertension and cardiovascular disease in the population as a whole,” said Dr Mark C Houston, author of the study.

Mineral water protects teeth from acids

Dundee: Mineral water has been found to protect teeth from erosion, says a study at the University of Dundee.

Just two glasses a day offer protection to children from acids even if they continue to drink damaging fizzy drinks.

Erosion caused by carbonated drinks, fruit juices and other foods wear down enamel making teeth sensitive.

The study looked at the lifestyles of 200 youngsters aged 11-13 and the effect on tooth erosion and concluded that the best prevention was fluroid toothpaste.

Dr Graham Chadwick, of Dundee University’s School of Dentistry said that results revealed that minerals in the water offer some protection from acids.

Obesity

image

Obesity is now an epidemic in many developed countries with one in five adults seriously overweight – 17% of men and 21% of woman are obese. There is also a large rise in the number of overweight and obese youngsters. Obesity in children aged between two and four almost doubled from five to nine per cent from 1989 to 1998. It trebled from five to 16 per cent among children aged six to 15 between 1990-2001. Obesity in women trebled between 1980 and 2002 from eight to 23 per cent. Obesity in men is even worse, with the figure rising fourfold from six to 22 per cent. Obesity causes at thousands of deaths each year, from medical conditions such as heart disease, strokes and diabetes.

Obesity is measured by calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI). This is your weight in kilo-grams divided by the square of your height in metres. A BMI above 25 is categorised as overweight, and above 30 is obese.

A recent study by the Netherlands Morbidity Research Group, which studied the health and lifestyles of 3,500 men and women over more than half a century has concluded that being obese or overweight in adulthood decreases life expectancy as much as smoking.

Dr Anna Peeters, of the Netherlands Morbidity Research Group, who led the study, said: ‘We concluded that obesity in adulthood is associated with a decrease in life expectancy of about seven years, both in men and women. The condition leaves people at risk of heart disease, diabetes, high bloodpressure and osteoarthritis. Recent studies have shown obesity is leading to more than 30,000 premature deaths annually in Britain from illnesses caused or worsened by being overweight.

Studies have shown that the ten per cent of women who are heaviest are 20 per cent more likely to suffer breast cancer than the ten per cent at the other end of the weight scale.

Instead of extreme diets, surgical procedures or drugs, doctors recommend sustainable lifestyle changes such as a varied and sensible diet including fresh vegetables and fruit with moderate amounts of protein and exercise that doesn’t necesarily mean going to a gym, such as cycling or dancing. See Elixirs and Diet .

New discoveries

Chemical that could burn away obesity

A compound called KB-141, which speeds up metabolism and also reduce cholesterol has been developed by the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb. It works by stimulating the thyroid hormone that regulates metabolism and cholesterol. Previous treatments have not been able to discriminate between different thyroid functions, and have affected both metabolic and heart rates. While most research into obesity has focused on appetite suppression.

Stomach pacemaker

An Italian doctor has invented a ‘stomach pacemaker’, the size of tiny matchbox, which when implanted within the stomach, slows down the movement of food through the intestine, making a person feel fuller and preventing hunger pangs.

The Gastric Stimulator (TIGS), is similar in design to a pacemaker but slows down the movement of food through the intestine. It sends out pulses of electricity that trigger activity by natural neurons in the stomach whose job is to tell the brain when there is no more room for food. In other words, it fools the brain into
thinking the stomach is full. Results from early tests on ten patients show they were able to lose 90 per cent of their excess weight over two years. The device would stay in the body permanently.

Other treatments for obesity include drugs and surgery such as stomach stapling the most popular forms of surgery, shrinks the size of the stomach but this can lead to complications. Another option, a gastric bypass, restricts both food intake and the take-up of sugar and fats.

Trials on the stomach pacemaker are being carried out by an American implant company, Transneuronix, on 150 people in Europe and the U.S. If the results are positive the pacemaker could be inplanted in Britain patients.

The device delays the emptying of the stomach. The signals are thought to restrict movement by shrinking the entrance and exit. At the heart of the technology is a stimulation lead implanted in the gastric area using keyhole surgery and connected to a battery-powered electrical unit implanted under the skin around the abdomen. A third piece of equipment is a computer that works like a remote control to check how the technology is working, and which is also used to change the type of electrical signals being sent out. Once it has been put in place, the device can be left on indefinitely or switched on when the patient feels an urge to eat excessively.

Herbal hunger cure

Research shows that those taking Zotrim, the brand name for a product that contains a combination of three South American herbs – shed around five pounds in a month.

Nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, who conducted the study, says the preparation could provide extra motivation for slimmers plagued by hunger pangs. ‘It promotes a physical feeling of fullness caused by a delay in the emptying of contents from the stomach,’ she said.

Taking the herbal tablets delays the rate at which the stomach empties by an average of 20 minutes. The delay is not dangerous – it merely extends the normal length of time taken to digest food. But it makes it difficult for people to eat too much as they feel uncomfortably full more quickly.
