The perverse joy of running – in snow, sleet and encountering jogger rage!

Just before Christmas I decided that I needed to take more exercise.  So do I rejoin a gym? My first thought is definitely not – the nearest is populated by guys who leave great huge  pools of sweat on the floor next to the exercise bike and grunt and groan on the jogging machine – and the whole gym generally stinks…And the ladies are not blameless – there is hair in the sinks and showers and more – YUK! And I don’t fancy using any one else’s towel but mine from home thanks.

So the only way forward is to jog on the street?  I used to run regularly and save money on gyms. Another plus is that it gets dark early so no one will see me while I am in the hobbling phase! On the negative jogging round Regents Park outer circle is fraught with all kinds of obstacles – giant tree roots that have raised the pavement and other joggers who are intent on going up your inner side no matter what! Hmm just like cyclists!!
Maybe it is any excuse not to? Then I had thoughts about those really brave people who took part in the Paralympics last year – all with disabilities and some without limbs who were managing to do a whole lot more than me.  So I told myself to stop being pathetic and get out there.
On the first attempt I surprised myself by getting a third of the way round without even getting out of breath – I could have gone further but since there was no one to push me…then I walked and ran the rest of the three miles.  Anyway, better to take it easy at my advanced age rather than do something silly and get an injury?
And so every other night I have been out there.  Even in the snow and ice.  And that surprised me because I don’t like running in the cold – but I donned a hat and gloves and had some music and I was warm in no time.  And I swear that when I got home I looked younger, glowing pink and my whole body felt great.
Co-incidental to this I receive a book in the post from ex-Navy fitness instructor Dave Concannon.  His book, Little Dave’s Big Fitness Plan, isn’t so much about what exercise you should be doing as motivating you to do it in the first place.  And as he quite rightly says:  “Getting changed is the hardest part”.  And why does Dave call himself ‘little’ – well he’s an unashamed 5’3″ but that stopped him taking on Navy battleship commanders and getting them fit too! But some other words in the book ring in my ears – that you will get a high from being one of the very few people exercising especially when the weather is at its worst – as it recently has in the UK. And he is right!
Dave.jpg
I have been out in the snow and the ice and I confess that it was exhilarating – warmed up after 10 minutes and home in 30 glowing again. And the fact that drivers and others stared at me as if I was mad made it all the more fun!
I have now made it the whole way round, without aching legs or lungs – not bad considering I have a chest infection. And today I think the effort of breathing so hard has thrown off the germs.
Feeling optimistic after completing the 3-mile round the outer circle intermediate route I encounter ‘jogger rage’ while doing a walking reconnoitre for the six mile circuit inside the park.  On the outer circle footpath which is very icy I walk towards the road to cross it but stop because of an oncoming car.  Then I hear a very angry “oh for goodness sake”  – and I turn round to see a very unattractive big-bottomed woman slowly pounding away…Hmm she clearly would have preferred it had I been hit by the car…
I can’t wait to feel the jogger’s high – which I have had in the past – that’s when you are not sure whether you may have died as you suddenly don’t feel tired and could run forever!
Do buy a copy of Dave’s book – it’s only £9.99  at Amazon – well worth it for the exercise tips and also the Navy anecdotes! Little Dave’s Big Fitness Plan: The hardest part is getting changed

Patients own skin may be used to repair damage of Mutiple Sclerosis

Scientists have revealed that a patient’s own skin may be able to repair the nerve damage caused by the incurable disease, Multiple Sclerosis.
MS attacks the fatty lining around the nerves causing malfunctions of movements and more.
But scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Centre in the US have used skin cells to repair the damage in  animal tests, says a report in the journal Stem Cell.
Just like electrical wires, nerves have insulation – but instead of plastic, the body uses a protein called myelin.
However, diseases that result in damage to the myelin, including MS, leave the nerves exposed and electrical signals struggle to travel round the body.
They took a sample of skin cells and converted it into stem cells, which are capable of becoming any other type of cell in the body. The next step was to transform the stem cells into immature versions of cells in the brain that produce myelin.
When these cells had been injected into mice born without any myelin it had had a significant effect, said researchers.
However, MS patients would still have the problem of their immune system continuing to attack their myelin.
Any treatment would need to be used alongside other therapies to tame the immune system – or would need to be repeatedly performed.

PASTA PISELLI
Serves – 2
Preparation Time – 15 mins
Cooking Time – 30 mins
CIRIO Pasta Piselli.jpg
Ingredients:
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 cloves garlic
½ onion
2 anchovies
0.2 litres vegetable stock
Splash of white wine
Small pinch red pepper flakes
½ cauliflower
½ bunch asparagus
Cup frozen peas
1 x 400g can CIRIO Chopped Tomatoes
Handful toasted slivered almonds
250g Farfalle pasta
Freshly grate parmesan
Preparation method:
1 Fill a large saucepan with cold water and place over high heat (this is for the pasta).
2 Pour olive oil in another large saucepan and turn the flame on low. Mince the garlic and add to olive oil, let cook until just starting to brown. Slice the onion and add to the garlic and olive oil. Add the anchovies to the pan and mash them until they disintegrate.
3 Next, add the vegetable stock and white wine. Turn the flame up to medium-low, and allow the stock and wine mixture to reduce for a couple minutes.
4 Take the head of cauliflower and peel away the green leaves. Cut off the stalks and discard. Chop the cauliflower crowns into bite-sized pieces, set aside. Add the chopped cauliflower to the onion/garlic mixture, and season with red pepper flakes, to taste. Reduce the heat back to medium, and let the cauliflower cook, stirring frequently.
5 Snap the asparagus in half and cut into bite size pieces on the diagonal. Add the asparagus and the peas and cook for about 5 minutes. When the asparagus is almost tender, add the tomatoes. The tomatoes should stay chunky, so do not cook too long, or stir the sauce too much because the tomatoes tend to fall apart. Add toasted almonds and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Remove from heat.
6 When the pasta water comes to a rolling boil, add some salt and then the pasta. Keep the heat on high. Cook pasta until firm to the bite, al dente. Drain and transfer pasta to a warm bowl. Sprinkle with olive oil, and gently toss. Then add the sauce and gently toss again.
7 Garnish with Parmesan or Romano and serve.

Boots & Specsavers et al – are they sponsoring the Liverpool Pathway too?

It’s very disconcerting to know that when you reach a certain age the mail that comes through your  letter box is designed to make you feel as if you have suddenly acquired a whole host of diseases and that you already have ‘one foot in the grave.’

Boots seem to be the most prolific.  What a delight this week to receive a letter with “Boots hearing care” emblazoned across it.  And ‘Swap Snippets for the full story’ –  and what that is supposed to mean I have no idea! Underneath, still on the envelope is:  ‘How a free check can improve your hearing.’
Since I have had no signs of suddenly going deaf….and the letter inside continues “Life’s more fun when you join in” Hmmm and I get 150 points on my Boots Advantage Card and one third of an invisible hearing aid – what joy I can’t wait.
So when I saw another letter entitled:  “More treats for over 60s” – I thought incontinence pads, chair lifts and worse.  This was also from Boots informing me that as an older person I will get 10 points for every £1 I spend (its normally 4) – does this mean they hope I won’t live long enough to claim them? Oh and 25% off complete glasses – so if I only have one eye I don’t get it?
So I get two letters from Specsavers informing me I can have a free eye test. This is along with letters and texts to my mobile phone from equity release specialists and pension providers – very annoying.
So it seems I am in imminent danger of going deaf and my eye sight deteriorating – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg…
Not to mention the bowel cancer kit, the mammogram …oh and I notice I won’t be able to be a blood donor after the age of 68 so best try and kick the bucket before then! Or if I end up in hospital better make sure I am not on the Liverpool Death Pathway or there is a “Do not Resuscitate notice in my file!
But not before I’ve jogged round the park and done my pressups! And thank goodness that the toyboy is not the postman!

Bioeffect EGF Serum

This serum has cult status with women paying a high price to get a virtual facelift from a bottle.  It contains EGF – Epidermal Growth Factors – which is a natural substance in the human body that promotes cellular growth.  But this EGF has been bio-engineered from barley so that it has none of the allergens that might be associated with animal-derived EGF.
As we age, along with most other things, our body produces less and so our cells start to wither.  The EGF in this product gives them a kickstart and they start multiplying anew.
Bioeffect EGF Serum
The barley is grown in Iceland where it is fed pure thermal waters and nutrients which also avoid the bacterial contamination of animal DNA.
In tests, women who used the serum over a period of weeks saw their pores shrink and fine lines fade but the most significant difference was that the thickness of skin increased.
There are only 9 ingredients in Bioeffect: Glycerine, Aqua, Sodium Hyalunorate, Tromethamine, Alcohol (less than 0.9%), Calcium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Hordeum Vulgare Seed Extract, EGF (Transgenic Barley sh-Oligopeptide-1).
It’s not cheap – at £125 for 15ml – but according to the doctor in the video below the results are what you would expect from a facelift or a laser treatment. We tried it and liked the way it lifted skin that was starting to sag around the chin after 2 weeks of use.  Buy at top department stores and also on line at www.bioeffect.co.uk

Zinc helps the immune system fight infections, including the common cold

Ohio: A new scientific study has revealed how the mineral zinc stops the immune system from spiralling out of control, as happens when people develop life-threatening infections.
The researchers say the findings could also explain why taking zinc supplements at the start of a cold can prevent it becoming worse.
Zinc.jpg

Zinc tablets

The researchers from Ohio State University had shown that zinc-deficiency could lead to excessive inflammation, which is what happens in  sepsis, when in response to a severe infection, the body goes into overdrive, with potentially fatal consequences.
Through further experiments in human cells and animal studies the researchers found that a protein called NF-kB lured zinc into the immune cells that responded fastest to fight infection.
Once inside, the zinc then put the brakes on further activity in the NF-kB pathway, slowing down the immune response and limiting the amount of inflammation, the study, in Cell Reports, indicated.
Study leader, Dr Daren Knoell, said: “The immune system has to work under very strict balance, and this is a classic example of where more is not always better.
“We want a robust inflammatory response, which is part of our natural programming to defend us against a bug.
“But if that is unchecked, and there is too much inflammation, then it not only attacks the pathogen but can also cause much more collateral damage.”
He added that the finding narrowed the gap in scientists’ understanding of the role zinc had in fighting infection, but that it was too early to make the leap to zinc as a treatment for sepsis.
Intriguing
Zinc has been shown to reduce the severity of the common cold in humans and possibly shorten its duration.
“Whether this is because of improved balance in immune function, similar to what we report with sepsis, remains to be proven but perhaps requires further study,” Dr Knoell said.

Short bursts of exercise as good as full workouts

Short bursts of exercise, such as climbing stairs, is just as beneficial as a regular workout, according to new US research.
Yogaonbeach.jpg
Co-author of the report, Professor Brad Cardinal, of Oregon State University, said that some everyday chores can all add up to a 30 minute workout and is a more natural way to exercise.
Included is light exercises, such as simply walking around while talking on the phone, which help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
The researchers found that 43 per cent of those who did light exercise -including everyday chores that take a minute or two each – met government physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes per day, compared with less than 10 per cent of those who worked out.
Professor Cardinal added: ‘People get it in their minds that if they don’t get 30 minutes they might as well not exercise at all.
“You will always be presented with things that entice you to sit or be less active – such as using a leaf blower instead of a rake.  But making physical activity a way of  life is more cost-effective than an expensive gym membership. You’ll be healthier, more mobile and just feel better all round.”
Prof Cardinal said instead of driving half a mile, people should try biking or walking the same distance, and even doing pushups while watching TV.

A new dementia drug offers hope to some sufferers

A new dementia drug made from pigs’ brains could help sufferers of a vascular variant of the disease.
The new drug, brand name Cerebrolysin improves concentration, memory processing and mood in patients and appears to have no adverse side effects.
Vascular dementia, caused by damage to blood vessels supplying the brain affects around 1 in four of dementia sufferers.  Symptoms include vagueness, lack of concentration, difficulties communicating, as well as seizures and confusion.
The drug which is still undergoing trials is licensed in some countries for dementia, stroke and traumatic brain injury – although not yet in the UK or US.
A recent review by researchers at the Department of Neurology at Sichuan University in Sichuan, China, said they had found evidence to suggest that Cerebrolysin can help improve cognitive and global function in patients with mild to moderate severity vascular dementia. They reviewed evidence from six trials on 597 patients who were given Cerebrolysin in different amounts over different timespans. It was found that the drug significantly improved brain function, including recall, arithmetic and other cognitive abilities. It also improved general mood.
Cerebrolysin is a drug made from pig brain proteins that has produced some positive results from small vascular dementia trials. Another difficulty is that it has to be given by regular intravenous infusions necessary, says the review. So far no serious side affects have been reported.

Dieters inclined to ignore alcohol calories, says new medical research

Alcohol is almost as calorific as fat but many dieters tend to ignore it, according to research from the World Cancer Fund.
pint.jpeg
A drinker may get nearly 10% of total calorie intake from alcohol but many regard it as ’empty’ calories. But having a large glass of wine at 178 calories is the same as eating two chocolate digestive biscuits. And to exercise if off you will need to go for a brisk 30 minute walk. Added to which there is no nutritional value in alcohol.
Kate Mendoza, head of health information at WCRF, said: “Recent reports have shown that people are unaware of calories in drinks and don’t include them when calculating their daily consumption.”
She said that cutting down on drinking has a big effect of maintaining a healthy weight as well as reducing the risk of cancer.
Alcohol has been linked with breast, bowel, mouth and liver cancer.
If you don’t want to abstain entirely, there are ways that can help you cut down, including opting for smaller glass sizes, diluting alcohol with soda water or a low-calorie soft drink, alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and keeping a few nights each week booze-free.
Find out your calorie intake through alcohol: the WCRF has produced an Alcohol Calorie Calculator for different drinks that shows approximately how much exercise you would need to do to burn off the alcohol calories you consume.

Poor dental hygiene link to eyesight loss in older men, experts warn

Scientists have discovered a possible link between tooth loss and blindness in older males.
Results of the study published in the Journal of Periodontology3 reveal men are more than four times as likely to suffer from age-related blindness if they have lost the bone supporting the teeth compared to the general population.
Microscopic image of a young plaque sample from a human mouth. Source Listerine -thumb-2775x1870-1051.jpg
Although bone loss was seen more often in those suffering with age-related blindness, there was still a significant increase in the number of men affected once common risk factors between the disease and poor oral health had been taken into account. The study also showed the relationship was not seen in women.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition among people age 50 and over, and is a leading cause of blindness. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly.
Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, discussed the possible implications for almost half a million people in the UK suffering from AMD4.
Dr Carter said: “It is well-documented that you can reduce the risk of getting AMD by quitting smoking, moderating alcohol intake and having a healthy, balanced diet. These are all lifestyle factors that would be also lead to poor oral health, so the results of this study are particularly interesting, given they have all been accounted for.
“What the study does show is how important it is to maintain good gum health. More teeth are lost through long-standing gum disease than through tooth decay.
“Those who may be at risk of going blind may find their teeth are naturally looser than some of their younger counterparts, but ignoring the problem is not the answer. Untreated gum disease can lead to bacteria getting into the bloodstream and causing heart and respiratory problems. With the number of people over 60 set to increase, it is particularly important for older people to brush twice a day for two minutes at a time using a fluoride toothpaste and to clean in between the teeth at least once a day with interdental brushes or dental floss. Use of mouthwashes to help prevent plaque build-up or products specifically developed for dry mouth can also help them maintain optimum oral care and prevent problems.”

Strawberry and blueberries may cut heart attack risk in women

berries.jpgEating three or more servings of blueberries and strawberries per week may help women reduce their risk of a heart attack by one-third – according to research from the University of East Anglia in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health.

Although its already known that these berries contain high levels of powerful anti-ageing bioactive compounds called anthocyanins (a sub-group of dietary flavonoids), the new research comfirms their health benefits.

Research published today in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association shows that these anthocyanins may help dilate arteries, counter the build-up of plaque and provide other cardiovascular benefits.

Scientists from UEA’s Norwich Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health (US) studied 93,600 women aged between 25 and 42 who were registered with the Nurses’ Health Study II. The women completed questionnaires about their diet every four years for 18 years.

During the study, 405 heart attacks occurred. Women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had a 32 per cent reduction in their risk of having a heart attack compared to women who ate the berries once a month or less – even in women who otherwise ate a diet rich in other fruits and vegetables.

The study was lead by Prof Aedín Cassidy – head of the Department of Nutrition at UEA. She said: “We have shown that even at an early age, eating more of these fruits may reduce risk of a heart attack later in life. This is the first study to look at the impact of diet in younger and middle-aged women.

“Blueberries and strawberries contain high levels of compounds that have cardiovascular benefits, and our study shows that women who ate at least three servings per week had fewer heart attacks.

“The findings were independent of other risk factors, such as age, high blood pressure, family history of heart attack, body mass, exercise, smoking, caffeine or alcohol intake.

“Blueberries and strawberries were part of this analysis because they are the most-eaten berries in the United States. It is possible that other fruit and vegetables could produce the same results.”

Senior author and associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard, Eric Rimm, added: “Blueberries and strawberries can easily be incorporated into what women eat every week. This simple dietary change could have a significant impact on prevention efforts.”

Until more information about specific dietary constituents like flavonoids is available and fully understood, the American Heart Association recommends eating a balanced diet containing a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products. Eating a variety of foods is the best way to get the right amounts of nutrients.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Co-authors are Kenneth J. Mukamal M.D.; Lydia Liu M.Sc.; Mary Franz M.Sc.; A. Heather Eliassen Sc.D.; and Eric B. Rimm Sc.D.

Women’s emotional intelligence grows with age, says expert

Women improve with age by becoming even better at relationships of all kinds, clearer communicators and have even greater emotional intelligence according to Cognitive Neuroscientist and Business Improvement Strategist, Dr Lynda Shaw.

With much talk in the media about the drawbacks of ageing, Dr Shaw says women naturally reinvent themselves as they mature.
Dr Shaw explains: “Both genders can relish that experience brings confidence and we learn to enjoy the here and now more as we age.  We have realistic expectations and have probably invested heavily in great relationships with friends and family. Most of us care about our appearance, but have also learnt to place importance on other things.  That said, women are quite extraordinary as they get older.”
“As our oestrogen supply runs down around the time of the menopause and we have been around the block a few times and picked up a few bruises along the way, women are more able to observe, read a situation, evaluate and communicate.  They are more likely to have strong relationships and as children grow up, the female needs to find other investments to satisfy her needs.  This is when her attention moves further outside the home and at this stage women are stronger than ever, and can contribute enormously to the economy, community and society as a whole.”
Women tend to talk more in order to feel bonded to her female friends.  A female is hard-wired to seek out her network in readiness for times of trouble but is also able to ‘read’ situations with greater clarity.  Shaw continues: “It is quite typical for men to think women are almost spooky in the way they intuitively understand things.  The female will ‘see’ problems that males are oblivious to.  Take the scenario of a party   A woman will notice if a couple have fallen out, or if there is an attraction between two people who have spent the evening avoiding one another.  Men rarely notice such things.  There is nothing spooky going on, females are just wired differently to males and they get even better at it with age.”
So why are women different to men?
THE FACTS
At 6 – 12 weeks gestation a foetus is exposed to a flood of hormone secretion.   This is either a surge of testosterone, oestrogen or progesterone depending on the genetic code of whether we’re male or female. Therefore, this hormonal output results in our sexual differences both physically and in the brain which leads to different patterns of behaviour.
Scientific research has repeatedly found that the hypothalamus is different in a male and female brain.  This region controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep as well as affecting the endocrine system that also controls sexual activity.
Studies have also found that men have larger brains, but we now know that size doesn’t matter as there is no difference in intelligence!
The male brain has more grey matter and the female brain has more white matter so we think differently.  Grey matter is rich in active nerve cell bodies and white matter consists more of bundles of nerve fibres which are the connections between neurons.
The female brain has a larger limbic system, which means that females tend to be more in touch with their emotions. In addition, the language centres are larger in women and females tend to respond better to auditory stimulation.
Dr Shaw continues: “Both typical male and female brains have their own strengths, but we are products of our biological genetic code, chemical make-up including hormones, environment and social upbringing. Discussing typical gender characteristics must not inflict unnecessary limitations on any of us.  That said, the world is beckoning for the mature women who have improved with age to embrace and enjoy the wonderful resources and experiences they have.”

Britain’s oldest man dies age 110+

Reg Dean, a former Church minister, from Derbyshire died last sunday at the age of 110 years and 63 days. He was the oldest man in Britain.
Oldest.jpg
During his lifetime he witnessed two world wars and 24 prime ministers.
Born in Tunstall, Staffordshire, on 4 November 1902, Mr Dean died at his home in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, on Saturday. He was married three times and had one son and two grandchildren. he served as an army chaplain in Burma during WWll
He often said his longevity was down to his ‘laziness” but his list of activities says otherwise. He was ordained in the Church of England and in 1958 became a teacher. He founded the Dalesman Voice Chair on 1987, took up painting at 80 and wrote short stories. Interestingly he was also a vegetarian.
His son, Chris Dean said he father attributed four reasons for living to a great age:
  • always look for the best in people not the worst
  • the love of God whoever that god or faith may be
  •  doing things for the kindness and not for the prize or the reward and, lastly
  •  being vegetarian, which he was for 30 years.

Anti-ageing properties of tomatoes revealed by new research

Tomatoes, particularly when eaten as part of a Mediterranean-style diet, have an array of anti-ageing properties, new research in the UK reveals.
The research has once again identified lycopene, a key nutrient in tomatoes and other red vegetables and fruits, as the principle source of the health benefits, after trials with a supplement.
TomatoesA.jpg
 They discovered the following:
  • lycopene boosts the elasticity and efficiency of blood vessels, reducing the hardening of the arteries, which occurs with age and improves blood flow
  • The supplement used in the study, brand name Ateronon,  was shown to improve flexibility of blood vessels by up to 50%.
  • Ateronon was shown to dramatically improve the function of the cells of the endothelium, the layer of cells lining the blood vessels, in the group of patients suffering from heart disease.
The Mediterranean diet, in which large amounts of vegetables are eaten,  allows populations in Southern Europe to live up to ten years longer than their Northern counterparts.
The research team from Cambridge University has found that taking Ateronon, a newly developed version of lycopene, improves absorption into the blood to levels way above those naturally achieved by a Mediterranean diet.
The scientists used Ateronon, a lycopene supplement, for the research and it was shown to improve flexibility of blood vessels by up to 50%. Not only that but lycopene will help revolutionise the treatment of heart disease and circulatory disease, the biggest causes of death and disease in Britain. Every year 180,000 people die from heart attacks and 49,000 from strokes, with medication for sufferers costing a further £2bn every year.
The two-month study compared the effect of Ateronon on 36 patients with pre-existing heart disease, who were already taking cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, and 36 healthy volunteers. Both groups had an average age of 67 and comparable blood pressure readings, though those with heart disease already had noticeable blood vessel damage.
Ateronon was shown to dramatically improve the function of the cells of the endothelium, the layer of cells lining the blood vessels, in the group of patients suffering from heart disease.
Increasing blood lycopene levels boosted the endothelium’s sensitivity to nitric oxide, the gas that triggers the dilation of the blood vessels in response to exercise and demand for increased blood flow in healthy people.
If the same results can be demonstrated in more patients, Ateronon could revolutionise the treatment of heart disease. In addition, if it is scientifically proven Ateronon does have an effect on endothelial function, then it could also have a beneficial effect on virtually every inflammatory disease process, including things like arthritis or diabetes, and even slow the development of cancer, which is also linked to inflammation.
Ian Wilkinson, director of Cambridge University’s clinical trials unit, who was involved in the study, said the results suggested that Ateronon might slow down the worsening of symptoms in people already suffering from heart disease.
Peter Kirkpatrick, a leading Cambridge neurosurgeon with an interest in strokes and circulatory disease, is now medical advisor to CamNutra, the company which has developed Ateronon and which sponsored the Cambridge trial, said: “The results from this trial are far better than anything we could have hoped for.”
He added: “This was a small group, and we now need to confirm the findings in a much larger study population.”
If the results from the next round of trials are favorable, Ateronon could also offer an effective alternative to statin treatment for heart disease sufferers who cannot tolerate the cholesterol-lowering drug.
Until now however, there has not been a way of improving the natural slow absorption of lycopene by the human body.
Mediterranean populations have always enjoyed a protective effect against heart disease from their diet, and dozens of researchers have already suggested tomatoes may be the source of this protection, though until now, an explanation of the mechanism involved has remained elusive.

Roquefort cheese may protect the heart, says new study

The French blue cheese, Roquefort, which is matured in caves,  has ‘anti-inflammatory properties’ that guard against cardiovascular disease, according to new research being carried out in the UK.
The discovery, by biotechnologists at Cambridge-based company Lycotec, say the cheese, which is matured in caves, may be the miracle food behind the French health paradox – eating a diet rich in fat but still remaining slim with the lowest rate of cardiovascular disease in Europe.
roc.jpeg
A process that occurs as the cheese ripens is good for a healthy gut, helps slow arthritis, and can slow the signs of ageing, such as cellulite, according to researchers Dr Ivan Petyaev and Dr Yuriy Bashmakov.
Researchers found that the properties of the blue cheese worked best in acidic environments, such as the lining of the stomach.
‘We hypothesise that cheese consumption, especially of moulded varieties, may contribute to the occurrence of the “French paradox,” they said in a report.
Their research concludes that regular consumption by the French of Roquefort, Camembert and other moulded fermented cheeses could be one of the reasons the nation has the lowest rate of cardiovascular mortality in the developed world.
The experts said Roquefort’s properties could be extracted and used in pharmaceutical and anti-ageing products.
The report stated: ‘Observations indicate that consumption of red wine alone cannot explain the paradox and perhaps some other constituents of the typical French diet could be responsible for reduced cardiovascular mortality.”

Win a Ladypillo breast support worth £60

Ladypillo is used by some of the UK’s leading spa chainsincluding Clarins and Dove, to give women extra comfort during treatments.

They also offer extra support and comfort to women who may have larger breasts or for breastfeeding. The Ladypillo range offers optimum comfort and relaxation through ergonomic design and  support without constricting sensitive breast tissue.

Ladypillo

Research into the design and creation of the product came after speaking to hundreds of therapists and treatment providers from all around the UK, and rigorous testing over years.
Despite average breast sizes increasing from 34B in the 1950’s to 36C nowadays and the continued popularity of breast augmentation, Ladypillo the first company to produce a specially designed range of memory foam cushions that eliminate pressure points.
Ladypillos are designed to absorb the upper body weight, relieving pressure on the breasts and offering more abdominal and back support. They even aid in maintaining good breast health, as the tissue is not compressed. The range has more than transformed the treatment experience for customers but also allowed salons to be able to provide this enhanced comfort which is beneficial for a host of treatments. Suitable for all, it has proven to act as a support device for those with larger busts, offers additional comfort for those with breasts that may be tender, e.g. new mothers, those pre and post menstrual and post operative.
Each Ladypillo product is made from 100% memory foam, which reacts and responds to the body’s heat and weight, to mould and support the body’s natural contours, thus resulting in ultimate customer comfort and satisfaction. The pillows return to their original shape after each treatment. Each product comes with a removable, non-allergenic, anti-bacterial, breathable, waterproof cover, which is fully machine-washable at high temperatures.
Marie Schmid, Head of Treatment Development at Clarins UK Ltd, said: “Ladypillo is a professional company with a professional outlook!  Great products that are extremely comfortable, supportive and totally unique to the market place.”
Peter Botton of Old Court Acupuncture, said: “Since introducing the Ladypillo into my clinic, all my clients have said how much more comfortable they feel when receiving treatments to their backs, shoulders and backs of legs. The Ladypillo is a great product and a great investment for me!”
Chloe Nelson, Director at Ladypillo, comments:  “The idea of Ladypillo came after countless visits to spas and salons hoping for a relaxing massage treatment yet feeling uncomfortable and sore when leaving. I couldn’t believe that there were no products to account for the shape of women and how if heavy on top or feeling tender, lying on your front can be quite sore! Therefore I set out on a mission to create a product that would transform the comfort and relaxation of treatment experiences and leave women feeling amazing. Ladypillo has filled a gap in the market that ordinary salon furniture and rolled up towels just can’t beat and it’s great seeing such a fabulous response.”
Designed and manufactured in the UK, Ladypillo is can be shipped worldwide. The Ladypillo products are currently for sale via the website – www.ladypillo.com and are priced at £59.99.

Get fit – win the latest Italian hydrodynamic swim goggles + kit

Why not kick-start your fitness regime by taking up swimming? Elixir has teamed up with Aqua Sphere to offer you the chance to win a pair of their new technologically advanced swim goggles plus kit to go with it – all worth more than £45!
Recognised for its relentless pursuit of innovation, award winning swim kit expert Aqua Sphere is really proud of its new K180 – the first ever hydrodynamic small socket swimming goggle with asymmetrical and anatomical curved lenses, combining outstanding wraparound vision with the most comfortable and natural fit possible.

K180 Lady Pink Clear - 173110.jpg

Aqua Sphere is highly regarded for the technological excellence of its groundbreaking eyewear which uses clever curved lenses to deliver a full 180 degrees of vision.   The K180 is its first ever small socket goggle and it has been devised to not only offer a wider field of vision than current racing or competitive goggles but to deliver superior performance because it sits very close to the eye. The goggles are extremely stylish – not surprisingly they are made in Italy.
Using an ultra-soft proprietary composite material, the K180 follows the natural line of the eye socket, ensuring the goggles feel completely secure and stable, even during pool dives and turns, and can be worn for extended periods with minimal discomfort.  The curved lenses, integrated side loops and low profile buckles also create a more hydrodynamic profile than current options on the market because the latter have flat face lenses and their inherent corners and edges reduce their streamlining capability.    A K180+ micro gasket version is suitable for faster elite-level racing.
Interestingly, both goggles are also available in Lady versions to offer the best possible fit for the female face, which Aqua Sphere proudly offers for many of its goggle and mask designs.   Try Aqua Sphere aquatic eyewear and we are confident you will notice the difference in terms of amazing vision and really great comfort.
